Beautiful ^ videos! They must look stunning on a native 8K TV.

Youtube will explode with native 8K videos once Canon and Sharp launch their native 8K HDR camera later this year.

It’s too bad no 8K TVs currently out can play 8K videos from YouTube. I wonder if this year’s models will do it out the box or will they need to be updated later?

QLED 8K: Where AI Upscaling Meets Deep Learning

Quote:
In recent times, screen picture quality has transcended high definition – these days, it’s all about ultra-high definition. Although today’s hardware has been developed to support not just 4K content but 8K content as well, only recently has content begun to actually be produced to 8K quality standards. Therefore, in order to improve the video display quality of content made before 8K existed, upscaling technology exists to keep up with today’s ultra-high definition standard.

Samsung Electronics’ 2020 QLED 8K TV lineup continuously receives praise for its devices’ innovative display quality, sound, design and many other areas. In particular, the range showcases an impressive evolution with regards to its video upscaling technology, at the core of which is Samsung’s AI Quantum Processor 8K.

Samsung Newsroom interviewed the team from the Picture Quality Solution Lab of Samsung Electronics’ Visual Display Business to learn more about this revolutionary technology.

A nice intro for consumers to watch from Digital Trends explaining HD vs 4K vs 8K

Quote:
I also like to point out the 8K TVs will be a better alternative to elaborate projection systems according to manufacturers the average screen size in people's home is going up.

Here's the thing though your living room isn't getting any bigger and your not sitting any further away from the TV so when you get a big display like that you want to take advantage of higher resolution with that in mind companies like Samsung Sony LG TCL and others they're looking into the future and figuring there's going to be a need for this kind of thing and save seven years which coincidently is how long it been since 4K TV came out also manufacturers want to push the movie TV and broadcast industry into the future and making an 8K TV is a way to do that.

Rafcave is a YouTuber who bought and took back the Samsung Q800T within a day because of its lackluster performance. His 2020 model didn’t even play YouTube videos in 8K. The highest resolution available is 4K. What a waste.

One does not need to be a genius to know that a Samsung TVs have lacklustre performance.

I'm waiting for to see if Samsung can even meet expected contrast modulation goals they set for this year after looking so bad in 2019?

Doubt if we will hear anything from the Samsung Newsroom!

Sharp launches two new Aquos 8K Smart TVs in Japan with 8K Pure Color Panel

Quote:
Sharp has announced two new 8K smart TVs for the Japanese market named Sharp Aquos 8T-C70CX1 and Sharp Aquos 8T-C60CX1. As their name suggests, they feature 70-inch and 60-inch 8K panels, respectively. The company will be only manufacturing 2,500 units of them and they will go on sale from April 25 at an undisclosed price.

The new Sharp Aquos 8T-C70CX1 and Sharp Aquos 8T-C60CX1 smart TVs feature the company’s 8K Pure Color panel with a 16% wider color gamut than the display manufacturer’s conventional 4K TVs.

The TVs come with Sharp Medalist Z1 image processing engine and Rich Color Technology Pro to offer rich and realistic colors as well as good viewing angles. The TVs also offer good brightness levels via UV2A liquid crystal technology by analyzing video signals along with detecting light sources and reflectors.

Both the TVs come with two HDMI 2.1 ports for 8K 60Hz and 4K 120Hz video inputs. The TVs also support dedicated 8K sports mode and can also upscale 4K content to 8K. They are even certified for HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG.

How to establish an 8K Future - BroadcastPro - 4/12/20

"Manufacturers are pushing 8K sets, but are we ready? Do we have the content, infrastructure and standards to take this format forward? Thierry Fautier explores the challenges and solutions for making 8K an industry standard."

Thierry Fautier is Vice President of Video Strategy at Harmonic and President of the Ultra HD Forum.

Summary
Quote:
To summarise, 8K still needs several years before widespread adoption takes place, in terms of content availability, an established business model, device availability and potentially a new codec. At Harmonic, we see 8K as more than a mirage. We think the market will take off in 2022 and be mature by 2024.

Some critical issues need to be addressed before the industry is prepared to transmit 8K. There needs to be an economical way to distribute it. A standard for broadcast is a significant missing piece. After the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, more infrastructure improvements, such as IP workflows and cloud infrastructure, will help simplify 8K delivery during the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022 and future events.

Streaming appears to be the path of least resistance for 8K. To enable 8K streaming, high-speed broadband networks are still needed. A better codec will also be required down the road. Technologies such as CAE can play a role in bringing down the bitrates to a more affordable level. However, for this to work, network infrastructure providers need to add eMBMS support for 5G. The good news is that eMBMS is currently being standardised within 3GPP. Device support will be crucial to its success.

For now, the industry will continue investing in 8K production. Once more 8K content is available and the prices of 8K TV sets drop, and a good high-speed IP infrastructure has been built, consumers will be able to truly enjoy the spectacular clarity that 8K provides.

8K TV shipments not to take off until 2021

Quote:
Expectations that vendors would ramp up global annual shipments of 8K TVs to over one million units may not realize until 2021, as prices of these models remain too high and the coronavirus pandemic has undermined consumer demand globally, according to industry sources.

The flat outlook comes even though related vendors have rolled out various 8K models, including Samsung's 65-, 75-, 82- and 96-inch QLED 8K TVs, LG's 65-, 75-, 77- and 88-inch OLED models, and similar models from Sharp and other Chinese players, said the sources.

Sharp is trying to ramp up its 8K TV shipments in the Taiwan market, slashing the price of its 60-inch 8K models to around NT$150,000 (US$4,986) recently, with plans to start marketing its 120-inch 8K TVs in the local market in the second quarter, the sources noted.

Vendors who had been hoping to ramp up shipments of 8K models to markets including China, Europe and the US - where demand for high-priced TVs is usually higher than other markets - are now unable to promote those models as the pandemic has stalled consumer demand there, the sources noted.

The postponement of the Tokyo Olympics has also dealt a blow to TV vendors' promotion for 8K TVs, add the sources.
