Changing the subject, I remember roughly 87% of forum talk revolving around Harrison's age during KOTCS production. Remember all the hilarious () titles people made up, Raiders of the Lost Nursing Home etc etc.

Strangely, 11 years later, with Harrison at 77 years old before production even begins, I haven't seen any of that going on this time in any forums.

Liam Neeson, your work is done.

When I see David Koepp's name attached to a Spielberg film, my heart kinda sinks. War of the Worlds, Crystal Skull, The Lost World, painful ice cream scene in Jurassic Park. But here's hoping...God knows they've had enough time to figure out the script, right? ... Right? ... Please God, tell me I'm right.

Jurassic Park is a certifiable classic, War of the Worlds is great, Lost World has a great middle hour and falls apart in the last act (Spielberg lost his nerve after seeing Independence Day in the Summer of '96 and reconstituted the entire last act of TLW at the eleventh hour - hardly Koepp's fault). As for Crystal Skull, Koepp had an almost impossible task of synthesizing a number of different scripts written by a number of different people over many years.

Come.to.think of it, ALL of the Indy movies have been fed through numerous writers on the way to their final incarnation. It wasn't until many years later that the contributions of Philip Kaufman and Tom Stoppard to Raiders and Crusade became apparent.

That said, I still wish it were Lawrence Kasdan returning.

KOTC is almost like my TLJ, although I wouldn't argue it was a masterpiece. I also don't feel compelled to defend it online to others either. I just like it.

Koepp is no master screenwriter, but Spielberg trusts him, approved the scripts, and used them to shoot. He probably have poor judgment in getting a good script.

He's grateful to David Koepp for pulling Jurassic Park out of the dumpster fire that was Chricton's draft and then Malia Scotch Marmo's attempt...Spielberg took Marmo to dinner to break the news -- "I think it's a miss." Problem was, production dates were locked. Koepp came in very late, two scenes were already boarded by Spielberg. The T-Rex attack on the road and the kitchen raptor sequence, so Koepp had to have those. He went to town and pushed out a draft very quickly. The cast didn't have a script in hand until something like two weeks (I heard ten days, but that's hearsay) before the start of principal. So Spielberg obviously respects him. I just kinda roll with William Goldman -- the first draft of anything is shit. Imagine if Koepp had a year or six months to polish that up, as opposed to a few weeks.

So sure, Koepp is a great relief pitcher, coming in at the seventh inning. Spielberg can't contain his ideas, so he probably needs someone like Koepp to keep up or make those ideas work, but if I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times, Spielberg always shows up with his brilliant choreography and optimism and intuition, but his films rise and fall on the quality of the writing. Jurassic Park is frustrating because you have amazing staging and terrific performances -- everyone is perfectly cast -- then you get that damned ice cream scene and other small instances of "first draft-isms" because the script was rushed out to meet the start date. Koepp is probably a hero to Spielberg for being able to do what he did and write something that worked in such a short time frame. Koepp is a smart writer, I just wish Spielberg would give him some advance notice and let things cook. So here's hoping Koepp has had plenty of time to work on Indy 5, because the thing that sunk Indy 4 wasn't Spielberg's direction...it was the script and the story.

Are we criticising the script to Jurassic Park now? That's a great movie and the script is really good. Certainly more memorable than most big movies these days.

I wonder how much of Goldblum was improvised...but then I remember stories of Spielberg telling the cast they weren't going to get indulged in multiple takes, if they didn't get it by take 5, they were moving on to the next setup, so maybe Jeff got some latitude in certain instances. Spielberg wrapped Jurassic Park 10 days early, which is incredible when you think about it -- he was afraid the production would get away from him like Jaws, so he moved like lightning -- and then immediately went to Poland to start Schindler's List.

Thanks Ernest. Yep, like I said before there must be something that Koepp can do that Spielberg keep coming back to him for his genre projects. That must be it.

PS: I'm not sure which ice cream scene we're talking about here, the one when the kids having after getting back to the center? Or the one with Ellie and Hammond? I don't have any issues with both anyways.

Writers have subtext for scenes, it's a dodgy situation when you make the subtext very obvious. I think the Ellie/Hammond scene needed a few more passes to sort of approach it in a more artful way instead of flat-out stating it. Ebert used to quote Flaubert, that an author needs to be like God in the Universe, present everywhere, but visible nowhere. I'm on board with that, otherwise you get things like Cecil B. DeMille introducing the 10 Commandments and telling everyone what to think about his movie. I think that ice cream scene is fine in it's first-draft intentions, but indelicate. Needed a few more passes, but everyone was out of time.

Seeing Harrison the other day at the UN climate change summit, and it struck me that he seems to have got back into his Indy shape again. He's shaved his beard and looks to have regained much of his upper body muscle. He has Indy's short-back-and-sides haircut with side parting again (which he doesn't usually have when he's 'off-duty").

With West Side Story now in or close to post-production, it looks like we're not too far away now.....

WSS is still filming.

And Harrison had the beard for Call of the Wild which, I assume, is now done.

"[].. legendary film producer Frank Marshall stated that the script for the currently-untitled Indiana Jones 5 starring Harrison Ford once again is still in the stages of development."

This is usually the stage when the do story meetings. Sounds like they discarded Kasdan's draft and is going for a clean slate.

So will this get delayed again? If they want to stick with Summer 2021 release date, the shooting should start in 2020.
