I like Crystal Skull, but if they would've cut out 3 or 4 sidekick characters to Indy I think it would've been more enjoyable.

The only thing Skull falls woefully short of the first three in is aesthetics; just looks too modern for its own good (and I think that's a Kaminski thing, his style just doesn't fit with Indy and if he was trying to imitate Slocombe, it didn't work). As for energy and in general, I really don't think Spielberg missed a beat after 19 years. If his heart wasn't in it, I don't see that (I know he didn't like the aliens but it doesn't come across in the movie).

IMO, the first 2/3 of Skull is pretty good and feels like vintage Indy. That last third though...woof.

I wonder if Spielberg dropped out because of his daughter (who is in the news). Maybe he wants to spend more time with his kids right now.

..... You guys have issue with this news? If Indy 5 just has to get made, I'd rather Spielberg step aside if he doesn't feel like he can deliver... and James Mangold is a very solid choice, the guy has dabbled in every genre and made quality films in all of em. He has the same kind of filmmaking sensibilities, and isn't just a Hollywood gun like Bay and JJ. What's the big stink about this?

Part of me wonders that in spite of Spielberg not really being a fan of the aliens bit of KOTCS, that even with Harrison returning his heart is not in this one because it's not being written by George.

While Abrams wouldn’t have been the right fit for this franchise, at least he’s shown he can deliver a proper love letter to one of the all-time greatest directors.

Even though I'm not *****ing about it, therefore not included in your comment, I probably won't be buying tickets. Spielberg's presence as the director is the only thing that ever made me watch those Indiana Jones movies in the first place, and I've gone out of my way to watch a Mangold film theatrically only once.

IJ5 just went from a must-watch-in-theaters-out-of-fan-loyalty to a wait-for-the-Blu-ray thing instantly.

Of course, Super 8 was my fav film of 2011... but still. Mangold is a better filmmaker, writer, and overall storyteller. You think he won't honor Spielberg and the franchise?

He just might, I don’t really have that many concerns. Especially after those exhilarating race scenes in Ford v Ferrari. The feel of Indy 5 most of all could be different without Spielberg’s fingerprints on it, but we’ll have to wait and see.

My point about Abrams is that he’s a solid enough director that bringing up his name for contention in the director’s chair is nothing to scoff at. I’ve come to enjoy every single film in his filmography thus far, and any studio would be lucky to have him on board.

It's far too messy a story and it's like Spielberg knew it but he went through the motions anyway.

If Mangold doesn't direct Indy 5 I will go ahead and do it.

So... nor Spielberg or Lucas are involved in the writing/directing of Indy 5 now?

Who is pushing this project into production, then? Do they have any drive or great idea that warrant a fifth film??

Spielberg should still be involved as a producer, and the story has been in the works for a good while with Spielberg overseeing it.
