Didn't Williams say he was retiring after Episode 9?

Steven confirmed it back in 2016 that Williams would score the fifth Indy movie. However, I don't know if the situation has changed since Steven's exit as director.

Really doubt Williams would have much interest if Spielberg and Lucas are out. I can't imagine Ford will stay on board too, with Spielberg not even coming back.

How do you know Ford even cares who the director is?

It sounds to me like Ford is really the one pushing to make this film now, so I bet he stays on (and if indeed Mangold directs, not like they got some hack). I wasn’t even sure Williams would do it before, as seems like at his age he can do fewer films and has passed on even some recent Spielberg movies.

JJ Abrams is going to take this over next, isn’t he...

If Mangold stays on, does that mean his Dylan movie with Chalamet is getting pushed?

He said he was retiring from Star Wars movies. I imagine at 88 he isn't going to be cranking out a lot of stuff, but I wouldn't rule out the possibility of him doing something else.

Quote:
John Williams, the Grammy and Academy Award-winning composer behind so many epic movie scores over the last half century, has announced he will retire from scoring the Star Wars movies after Episode 9.

William, 86, has been the expert hand behind all the main films in the Star Wars franchise, with his score for the original 1977 film winning an Oscar for original score.

"We know J.J. Abrams is preparing [Star Wars: Episode IX] now that I will hopefully do next year for him," Williams said in a radio interview. "I look forward to it. It will round out a series of nine, that will be quite enough for me."

I'm a really big fan of The Force Awakens (was more iffy on Rise of Skywalker), but I would be worried about the film if that were the case.

The first scene he'd come up with is Indy running away from another boulder: "But this boulder would be three times the size of the first boulder!"

He hasn't really 'passed' on any of Spielberg's recent movies. He couldn't do Bridge of Spies because of his heart surgery and his simultaneous commitment to The Force Awakens. Spielberg commissioned Alan Silvestri to do Ready Player One as its post production overlapped with preparation for The Post, a movie that came together very quickly. Spielberg decided that he really wanted John Williams to do The Post instead.

If Williams is out my vote goes to John Powell. His score for Solo was very good.

As much as the thought of another Indy movie being awful upsets me the thought that Crystal Skull will be how its left is just as bad. If Spielberg is hands on with the new film then coupled with a good director might mean we get something special again.

Give him a good sendoff and then lay the character to rest for good.

That will never happen. If the film is a success they will 100% want to keep the brand going and make more movies. They will keep making more movies until they have made people completely sick of the franchise. I'd rather something like Indy go out with a bad film like Crystal Skulls, than be dragged though the Disney mud in several more bad films until the number of bad Indy movies outnumbers the good.

Powell has always been my pick to continue Williams work. His music is rich with instruments and melody.

Anyway, there is about 1% chance Williams will do this.

Even if they do, it'll be more than likely the last one with Harrison Ford, so it'll be easy to dismiss and separate any attempted new films with a different actor. Also, I'm a bit skeptical a final Harrison Indy film will cause a wave of new Indy films-- they might try it once, nobody wants to see a different Indy, and it doesn't make much money (kind of like Solo).

Would like to see Indy and Short Round back. It would be a good way to send off Indy but continue the franchise. Short Round's character would keep a new sequel without Ford connected to the past. At the end have Indy give S.R. his hat.
S.R. says no that hat will always be yours, besides I can't get rid of my N.Y. hat
. At least take my whip kid(or we hear Indy say what S.R. real name is).
Now that I will put to good use.

If they reboot this, maybe they can tell the story his many adventures with Wu Han.

I'd like to see what James Mangold could do with this series; he's done some good work with previously-established characters in the past.
