Howard Hawks was riding dune buggies at lunchtime during the filming of Rio Lobo. He was in his 70s.

Some old dudes have it. Some don't.

He has the top doctors and fitness instructors at his disposal on Disney’s dime, I’m sure.

Those fight scenes have killed him in this series! I think he seriously injured his back in the ToD fight scene with the henchman in the room.

Hope he makes a swift recovery. This is exactly why many of us say Harrison Ford needs to hand on the title of 'Indiana Jones' to a new younger actor, who can better manage the action sequences.

Ford's spinal injury from the shoot of ToD happened from riding the elephants.

The fight scene with actor Pat Roach (who also played the German soldier that got his face redecorated by a propeller in Raiders) had to be shot around Ford not being present, which is why quite a lot of it was shot with his stunt double, which is why Indy's face is often obscured from view.

What fight scene with Pat Roach are you referring to?

According to The Complete Making of Indiana Jones, it was during the Thuggee fight in the bedroom when his back herniated. They were in the middle of filming Indy when he rolls backwards over the Thuggee during the strangulation and Ford let out a scream of pain. He'd already experienced a slipped disc sometime before, which had been aggravated from riding the elephants and was causing issues leading up to that fight scene.

Yep. And the fight with Pat Roach on the conveyor belt was largely filmed without Ford, using Vic Armstrong, Ford's stunt double, if I remember correctly. Later on, they filmed some inserts of Ford once his back had healed.

Hehe the wrong one, obviously.

Yeah, I thought Thulsa meant the conveyer belt fight; he was obviously referring to the fight in the palace.

Ford told a film magazine some years ago, that 'his back was injured from riding elephants' during the shoot. Well, either that, or from Kate Capshaw's constant moaning.

Or just retire the series altogether.

On the new 4K discs, you can really tell it's Armstrong in a handful of shots. Check out the moment where Willy Scott runs into the spike chamber screaming "Get them off of me, they're all over me! Get them off!" when she's covered with bugs. Armstrong is kneeling on the floor as Indy and he looks up at her. Totally him, not Ford. I guess they spared Capshaw from having to do that bit again once Ford returned.

I've always noticed that going back to at least the original DVD release. It's such a blatant "not Ford" shot I've always wondered why it was shot like that and not from a different angle to hide his face or something.

Likely when they saw playback on a small monitor they thought it looked okay. And Vic is a pretty spot on double for Ford to begin with.
