Crystal Skull was a better movie overall than both Avatar and POTC though.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the point I was making.

It had bad cgi, mainly due to color timing. It if didn’t look overly video gamey and bright; it could’ve blended in better.

I still don't understand, what's this Holy Graal you keep mentioning?

Not that there was any need for that in the movie.
Starting with the opening of the ark to the ripping hearts and finally Donovan turning to dust, a lot of the effects in the Indiana Jones movies are pretty hokey and silly, which is supposed to be part of the charm, but you know...everything needs to be realistic these days. *Sigh*

And the more they try the more they fail.
Endgame had a great Thanos, but all of their greenscreen work looks horrible by today's standards.

Best CG is what you don't see, but helps driving the story.

Enjoy getting studio jobs with the whole “CGI you don’t see” idea.

The scenes you mention are highly effective. Not hokey or silly imo. I don't recall which fx was bad in kotcs, but maybe we're more forgiving when it involves the supernatural. Cuz no one knows what that looks like.

I love every second of it. The visual effects are spot on, even the CG animals. Pause your player on the monkeys, they look really great. But I can see why people aren't seeing it, it's the color palette that makes it look surreal. I think it looks a lot like Doom, which has always been the idea I believe. While Crusade is more like Raiders.

The effects themselves are pretty hokey. The scenes are effective.

And yeah, because we all know what interdimensional beings look like.

Really my only "minor" gripe with the film now is the CGI. I remember Spielberg stating before principle photography started that he was going to "remain true to the spirit of the first three and use practical effects."

But I think he caved under the pressure of George Lucas to incorporate more CGI, who just spent the last 10 years making the Star Wars prequels which IMO, went wayyyy overboard with the CGI.

I hope Indy 5 is a return to form in both narrative and execution.
Believe it or not, a lot of the egregious decisions with CGI a la the opening gophers were Spielberg's idea. I like the movie fine and it works well if you don't watch it back to back with the other three where it's only going to pale in comparison, but there's definitely a lot to like. I think the opening is fantastic- including the fridge. All of these movies have RIDICULOUS conceits but it's all Spielberg's doing that you buy them. I love the man dearly, but I think the direction in the rest of Crystal Skull is the problem and not the story. I really hope this last one can find that same Temple Of Doom go-for-broke sensibility, because while I love all of the movies, that one is the best example of Spielberg being able to sell hokey ideas.

The CG isn't the best but it's made worse by really ugly CG lighting during the jungle scenes in particular, with light streaming through the trees and branches etc. Avatar was only a year later but its digital environments blew KOTC out of the water, i mean look at the jungle scenes in both, Avatar's are leagues better.

Where are all these 'CG looks fine' folk coming from?

There are scenes in Indy 4 that look like hot garbage. But the worst part is not the godawful CG in the jungle chase scene, its the fact it didn't need to be CG. Just film a real chase scene. And before anyone pipes up and says "but it was shot more practically than it looked" well then that just goes to show how royally it was cocked up. To make a practical scene look like shite CG is impressive.

That whole scene just looked awkward and unnecessary. Which sums up the film entire to be honest.

Crystal Skull has many great moments, Shia LaBeouf swinging on vines with cgi monkeys definitely isn’t one of them.
