I didn't realize this thread existed when I posted this thread about my HDR woes. If anyone could assist, that would be greatly appreciated.

Good news, Flatpanelshd just reported that LG will upgrade all 2016 UHD OLED and LCD/LED TVs to be HLG capable! I have been asking LG to update all 2016 UHD TVs to decode HLG and I am so very happy they are supporting the 2016 UHD line-up with this important HDR format. Bravo LG!

that will be exclusive to 2017 models for sure. they aint gonna hand out everything to 2016 customers otherwise there would be no incentive to buy 2017 models

HDR/WCG infrastructural progress is happening on levels at which the consumer may not be cognizant of, e.g. https://kws.smpte.org/kws/public/pro...project_id=387

Although no recent update has yet been published ^ (last being 9-19-2016) , I can inform folks that the DG has a plan to place static signaling parameters in the payload id and the remainder HDR metadata into a separate anc package after several proposals having been reviewed since the last public update.

So glad you posted this SVG video. I attended SVG's summer of 2016 NYC convention and I sat in the front row at this discussion seminar. At the conclusion I spent some time with Pat Griffis, from Dolby, I believe Pat is Dolby's CTO. I loved the convention and all of the sessions were very informative.

Thanks for that video, Penton. I didn't realize those three companies were vying for live HDR broadcast production marketshare. They all seem similar. Here's how I see it (oversimplified):
  • Dolby's PQ Live ingests anything, converts to and masters in PQ, transmits two complete signals of SDR and HDR (I'm guessing both HDR10 and DV?).
  • Sony's SR Live ingests anything, converts to and masters in S-Log3, transmits two complete signals of SDR and HDR (either HDR10 or HLG).
  • Advanced HDR by Technicolor ingests anything, converts to and masters in linear, transmits one complete SDR signal with HDR metadata to be converted to HDR (HDR10 or HLG) on the consumer end.

Did I get anything majorly wrong? Are there other big differences that I'm missing?

I'm a presenter at NAB in April 2017 and this is one of the items I'll be speaking about. From what I know broadcasters can send HLG with P3 color along with SDR/rec.709 color on the same carrier without buying any equipment.

For the past few years ENG cameras have a user switch to include HLG/P3 along with the 1080i/SDR/rec.709 signal and all of the switching and transmission equipment can handle the signal. If my understanding is correct broadcasters can begin to include HLG with P3 gamut and consumers with UHD HLG capable TVs can begin to enjoy HDR and WCG on OTT and OTA broadcasts.

I remember and along with at the time, the specific hyperlink to your facebook page as I enjoy bugging Mark about higher than HD spatial resolution as well as his typical conference attire -

No.

Also a nuance that Hugo (Sony) didn’t have time to cover in his presentation with a visual aid (slide) is that one fine aspect of S-Log3 as an intermediate production format which folks may not be aware of is that the key concept of S-Log3 OOTF is to create the best HDR images while at the same time maintaining a high degree of compatibility with the looks of the present SDR OOTF.

As you can see below, within the range of the SDR exposure, the S-Log3 curve closely follows the tone rendering behavior of the BT.709 OETF while the PQ and HLG curves exhibit a dimmer rendition. When the SDR compatible region of the S-Log3 signal is used as a production intermediate format it ultimately enables production folks to extend their grading skill sets of the SDR imaging world to the creation of the very best images.

^ But, despite being at the bottom of Lars’s totem pole, do I still like HLG?….

And for those who find it difficult to follow the HDR science of the presentations at that SVG summit and prefer the consumer electronics drama of different companies, fast forwarding to the Q&A at the 46 min 19 sec timestamp near the end of the clip….

Then, with regards to whether or not higher (and higher) nits truly translates into a better image (and still legally abide by energy efficiency standards), Josh, is trying to enlighten thee audience that what’s really most important is the overall dynamic range of the display (suggesting, without explicitly saying so, that OLED is superior to LCD) because he knows being in post production that the contrast ratio of the Sony BVM-X300 (a 1,000 nit display) is actually greater than that of the Dolby Pulsar (4,000 nit) display. I guess this will be fought out in Robert’s next VE shootout (newest consumer OLEDs vs newest consumer high nit LCDs wrt showing HDR content).
