So I'm gonna go ahead and embarrass myself.

Custom covers is something I've been wanting to get into for a while, since I know my way around Photoshop fairly well. I started with some relatively easy front image replacements, using resources from Google and Customaniacs. Eventually I had an idea for a whole cover for The Shining.

While Nicholson's "Heeeere's Johnny!" is the most iconic and widely used image from the film, I've always liked the visually striking and minimalist original poster art by Saul Bass, which was also used for the movie tie-in paperback.

So with the Warner BD template, some materials from Customaniacs and Google (including the largest image of the poster I could find), I cranked this out in less then half an hour:

Looking at the end result, I immediately knew I could do better, and spent the right amount of time to produce this:

The color, angle and text of the page was matched to a screenshot from the film. After noticing the poster included the "Circle W" Warner Communications logo (which I've always liked, and also designed by Bass), I added it to the spine, replacing the WB Shield. Another version was also made with the poster's full credit block on the front. If I were to change anything further, I might lighten the back page a bit, since I'm concerned it might be too dark when printed.

The design is simple because I like minimalist covers sometimes (critiques are welcome, of course), and also because I don't think I quite have the skills to do a fully spec'd official-looking back.

But I do have ambitions! I've got a few ideas in the pipeline, and right now working on an original poster cover for Enter the Dragon for the 40th Anniversary release due in June, since the official cover art is pretty uninspired. My current progress:

All resources are from Customaniacs except the credit block, which was made by me, derived from the 1993 VHS. The TT has been filled in and retouched a little and the tagline moved down closer to the main image. Right now the only thing holding me back is finding a good font for the copy text and features list.

WB is giving me so much to work with!

(It was too boring without some kind of texture, hence the wood.)

I'm working on some custom Blu-ray artwork and I'd like some recommendations on how large your artwork area window needs to be to print out on regular sized paper for your Blu-ray disk. I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS3.

Any suggestions on the work area for the artwork?

Do you mean the image resolution? The Warner template I downloaded is 3173x1762 pixels and 300 dpi, and many of the other covers I have are about that size, give or take.

yeah, I was referring to image resolution so that they are printed out right on a printer.

Some more handy numbers when you get ready to print: a standard-sized US Blu-ray case's cover dimensions are about 10.3933 inches wide by 5.8267 inches high.

At the end of the day that's all that matters As custom artists the only person we have to please is ourselves.

I often use era-specific studio logos for my Blu-rays including the TransAmerica UA logo and the 1978 era Columbia logo.

I like that and appreciated that "Argo" started with the 1980 era WB logo. I'm hoping that some studio knucklehead down the line doesnt try tto change that because it was a nice touch in a movie that otherwise butchered the truth.

I loved how Argo used the "VHS" logo as I call it at the start of the movie, so I updated my Argo cover to reflect the old logos.

Working on a Westworld blu - trying to keep it clean and simple. Had to rebuild the front since the best copy of the original poster had so much distortion and ripples from obvious photos of the original poster. Going to add the TV monitors on the back to hold imagaes of the movie. Those will be tricky to build to keep with the artwork style. Also went with the classic warner logos and VHS logo placement since this film is 1973, but kept the legal jumbo style current.

I often wish that studios would keep the classic logos on their movies. The UA TransAmerica logo from 1967 to 1982 always signaled to me that I was about to watch a James Bond movie.

Good move on the Argo cover. My "Force 10 From Navarone: custom used the 1978 era Columbia logo on the spine.
