Shouldn't really make a difference, as your printer will convert to CMYK for output anyway. There's no such thing as an RGB printer.

I once did a test where I fed my Canon inkjet an RGB image and the same converted to CMYK in Photoshop. The resulting prints were identical. YMMV, of course.

All of the custom covers I've come across were made, or at least saved in RGB. It takes up less space and is more web-compatible.

Retablo, your Apocalypse Now is beautiful.
I like how you extended the front poster all the way to the back, and superimposed Bob Peak's portraits. This is just the way I would have done it too.

For cover previews I have found nothing better than Imandix Cover Pro. It's the best $22 I ever spent.
