No, the frame is shifted up and to the right on the DVD. Up and to the right, up and to the right...sorry, went all Kevin Costner there.

[edit] And please note that I didn't say that the DVD had the exact same framing as the new Blu-ray, but it proves that there is an existing precedent for the framing to have been shifted in that manner vs the original Blu-ray.

I´d love to see Black Hawk Down mastered in 4K. The actual disc is pretty good, but given the fact that it´s encoded in MPEG-2, I think there´s enough room to improve the quality if remastered and encoded in AVC MPEG-4.

Yeah, Black Hawk Down would be a good candidate. The current disc is looking dated as you can tell it's an older transfer. Not terrible, but not as good as it can look.

The DE disc is the way to go for Black Hawk Down. It's AVC and has the most extras, but the audio is the best on the U.S. disc. The DE disc is also region B locked.

Yeah, you´re right about the DE disc, and living in Spain means no problem for me about the region B coding, but in this particular case, I prefer the US version because of the superior audio quality (the Spanish disc has a lossless track... but only for the Spanish audio -English track is only Dolby Digital 5.1-), my wife demands Spanish subtitles (DE has not Spanish subs) and ´cause the PQ is more than acceptable (although it could be better if remastered).

Is it actually a different transfer, or just encoded in AVC?

How about the zoomed/cropped 2.40 FX shots?

As Pieter V has kindly linked, the DE disc is the same transfer re-encoded. There are benefits to be had from the AVC encoding, of coarse, but no mind-blowing differences.

You picked out the train shot, well done. But the other two VFX shots in the capsaholic comparison are - you've guessed it - shifted up and to the right.

Let's face it -- Spider-Man 2 has yet to be released definitively on BD, even if we accept that the color, detail, etc. on the Mi4K disc is improved over the two previous releases (1 movie-only, 1 with Bonus Features).

That's as may be, but I'm very pleased with the Mi4K version for the advantages it has over the original Blu-ray. You guys wanna hold out for perfection on account of a few 'misplaced' pixels, be my guest, but I doubt that even the actual 4K version will be much different from this, let alone any future BD release (the Mi4K being the third so far).

What's the point of rewarding studios for falling short? This isn't primary school -- "A for effort!"
