But anyway, Welcome back, I hope Geoff (fellow UK-er) soon also reappears.

Anyway, we’re (England and the US) both following in the footsteps of India – http://advanced-television.com/2015/...a-4k-coverage/ but good thing is, no matter which country be participating in the 4K non-cinematic experience, the learning curve for 4K capture, production and delivery of sporting events is advancing with each testing….(U.S. event from Dec. 23 - http://www.intelsat.com/blog/media-b...live-4k-uhdtv/ ).
Geoff and I have kept up the chat elsewhere.
I am happynthey are going 4K but with sky I need to know what their content is.
UK Netflix has 3 non motion art titles so I wonder who they are getting in line.

It's hard to think that by the end of this year we will not only be able to read the reviews for the releases but we will also be able to buy them. I can remember emailing my local VUE cinema way back before 2010 sometime to ask them If they will be installing one of Sony's 4K projectors. They didn't know what I was talking about.

So excited, roll on Christmas

Does anyone know where DTS will announce X? I know it's March but I surmise that it will be at a trade show, when's CEDIA? I think IFA will hold a lot of information in September that will know doubt put purchasers off until the new year.

Right now it's hard to see them bringing everything together(HFR,HDR,REC.2020,10 Bit colour, 3D, 4:2:2) so I suspect that the players that are out at Christmas will be a bit gimped. What I really want is a full spec graphics card a Ultra HD BD disc drive and a Ultra HD monitor as I intend to get a new PC this Christmas. What are the chances?

That is impressive and I noticed that Warner Bros. has decided to do 10,000 nits HDR with 10-bit video. Dolby made their 10,000 nits HDR system so that each brightness step in the luminance range would have a 0.9 JND (just noticeable difference) when it is encoded with 12-bit video. For most of 2014 Dolby was promoting 12-bit video for HDR and than just a few months ago they suddenly switched to saying that 10-bit video was good enough. I like that Dolby is trying to improve video quality and can understand that they have to compete with other HDR systems, some of which claim to work with 10-bit video, but their recent change on bit depth seems to have been done for short term reasons.

Yes, MDA was what DTS was calling DTS UHD. It's now known as DTS X

From day 4 of the HPA Tech Retreat the "Enhancing the Creative Palette while Preserving the Intent from Camera to Consumer" panel proposed the idea of making a master for a movie using the largest color space and dynamic range that can be created and than using metadata to lower it for other displays. The "MPEG-H and Immersive Sound " panel said that the best benefit/cost combination was 7.1 + 4 height channels (in the corners of the room) though they were rather honest when they said that only the most enthusiastic consumers might do it. The "Tomorrow’s Ethernet: 25, 50, 100 Gbps?" panel showed the costs for different Ethernet ports and believes that 25 Gbps Ethernet would be best for uncompressed video.

The letter X runs through all DTS's next generation technology.

DTS Headphone X for headphones obviously
DTS X the successor to DTS HD Master Audio
DTS Neo: X DTS's equivalent to Dolby Pro Logic X upscale 5.1 7.1 to 11.1

I see what you mean. You know what they say though "X marks the spot".

Thinking about it X may not be the best name to go for, audio usually goes for 11 in advertising.... "this one goes to 11" also x markes the spot is a pirate thing.

Note…this kickstarter campaign is not about Fotokem’s Imagica ‘Bigfoot’ scanner.

These visual illustrations from your BBC boys (and girls) may help and it certainly will save me typing time...….http://www.bbc.co.uk/rd/blog/2015/01...-dynamic-range

Just tell me whether or not Preston beat ManU today.

I get the concept and understand how it works, my action cam has hdr turned on all the time.
the technology was not the issue for me. I understand how it works
My problem is I don't rate or like it as something they are forcing on movies that have no right being changed.
Nor does it influence me buying a 4k set this week.

Nope, but they gave them a scare

Well, I got to be out of here by 2:30 for a conference call, so who went thru?
As to HDR, yeah but what about new motion pictures (yet to be produced) mastered and delivered that way ( with more range).

Nope, it smells of "3d didn't work we need something new"
Hdr is not that new of a concept really and it will require adoption and when director's/cinematographers still swear off digital I don't see it setting the world alight.
I just don't like how the stuff I have seen looks, hdr on my dash cam improves detail in shadow areas but for movies it looks wrong
