I said you should, I think you need to reread a few posts.

If i had to guess, id say the regular 4k version was 8 bit.

But ive watched a few 10 bit 4k movies that didnt have HDR, and they lacked the punch/wow/detail that ive seen in the HDR movies. 10 bit and 4k is 1 category, while HDR is in its own category above it. This I am sure of. 10 bit 4k with no HDR is still flat looking compared to the 3d/high dimension look of 10 bit WITH HDR.

Sure, I didn't say the explicit difference WASN'T due to the HDR (note the bit about "colour volume"), just pointing out that it's bit depth which regulates how many "shades" of whatever gamut you're seeing, not just whether it's HDR or SDR specifically.

Right. And just goes to show that 4k by itself isn't a gigantic leap. The addition of hdr and wcg really turbo chargers the picture farther than what people are expecting.

That's exactly why the studios are going gaga for HDR, they know that spatial resolution isn't enough on its own. But, as you've just pointed out in another thread, HDR doesn't make everything automatically look Martian-good either so it's like any filmmaking tool: it'll be employed to work within the aesthetic that the filmmaker had in mind when shooting, so if that means a HDR retrofit isn't a retina-searing delight then so be it. I think older catalogue titles (even from just a few years back) may only see a modest improvement compared to very recent stuff which got a concurrent HDR grade (Martian got a Dolby Vision theatrical release, after all).

To comment on older stuff being regraded,

I actually purchased the amazon HDR versions of Hancock and Pineapple express. The hdr effect is pretty apparent for the entire movie. It makes the picture more 3d like with better dimensions to not only people but all objects too. I believe those movies were from 2007 or 2008. There were multiple times in each movie that made me say wow. The better cameras that were used, the more wow your going to get. Obviously the martian will have more wow, but I think most people will be very satisfied with the re-release of movies from the past 5 years (dark knights, furious movies, Pacific rim, LOTR, etc)

On thr other hand, there's also "after earth " which I think is from 2012, that one was pretty jawdropping. The earth scenes were as good as the Martians 6k scenes. It was beautiful.

Movies are products of their time. We should preserve the past just as much as we think about the future....

Re-grading movies with HDR, years or decades later, is just a travesty....

Same goes for movies re-released in 3D. Jurassic Park, Titanic, Terminator 2 etc.

At least James Cameron does it the right way but I still don't care....

as long as the new format doesn't hinder seeing them in a closer to original format, I don't mind. Some of the 3D upscales are quite nice.

Foxconnect has 5 of their 4K titles on their best selling list! Now I'm wondering how many sells it takes to get on the list... lol

You'd have a point if the original Blu-ray & HDTV masters could capture the entire dynamic range of the picture...but they can't.

HDR is necessary to do that.

Now if they exaggerate the dynamics of the picture, that is an entirely different story.

How to original picture theatre to home movie?

If I want to watch a picture vivid is brighter look like as clear color.

Cinema picture is a very warm.

Standard picture is not perfect dull colors.

(Scratchhead)
