Paul Blart 3: The Last Mall Cop Awakens and Paul Blart 4: Rise Of The Mall Cop will be shot back-to-back. The prequel, titled "Blart", will be shooting while those two are in post-production.

What? Kwai was shot 35mm scope while Lawrence was 65mm flat (and scanned in 8K for this restoration, albeit finished in 4K). Five years apart, fifty years apart, it doesn't matter: as good as Kwai looks, numerous lap dissolves aside, Lawrence is going to straight up murder it. Even any dissolves or fades in Lawrence are essentially first gen material because it was cut to A and B rolls, and as no-one was asleep at the wheel *cough* 2001 then all such editorial decisions should be present and correct.

I was gonna reply to this with "I think you have it confused with District 9?" but then I see Sweetie has dutifully chimed in with the inevitable D9 threadcrap.

I think they'll be fine with squeezing this onto a 100GB. I'd have preferred a 2-disc split as even 2x 66 would be 132GB, but as it is the movie is not exactly a bewildering Bay-esque editing nightmare which the compression has to chase after (2 Lawrence 2 Furious), it's letterboxed @ 2.20 which cuts down on the amount of picture area that needs encoding, and it won't have many foreign language dubs to soak up space.

I'm not worried. Sony has been pretty darn good at encoding.

Imagine if this was SC? lol

Maybe I should start posting about 2046 in every Sony disc thread, to make it a trifecta.

iTunes has an excellent 4k/Dolby Vision transfer for $5. I Airplay it to my Vizio with my iPad.

The JP Mastered in 4K release was on 2 discs, as we all know. Disc 1 was 139 min, and Disc 2 was 87 min. Now, in a perfect world, I'd love it if Sony replicated this with the UHD- Disc 1 being a BD-100, and Disc 2 being a BD-66; but, it probably won't be the case.

Sony is very good with compression, but even I have some doubts, albeit tiny, as to whether or not they can fit it on just one disc- this is a 3 3/4 hour film, after all.

It’s crazy to think about how the first (and only, actually!) time I saw this was on DVD via a small-ish CRT in my bedroom when I was in high school. This is gonna be quite the upgrade. I’ve always been hoping to find a 70mm screening, but this will have to suffice.

Again: the film has a lot of very still or slow moving scenes as well as very fine grain, coupled with a letterboxed presentation and minimal foreign language tracks. All of this in the hands of a skilled compressionist is no reason to unduly worry.

I'm not saying it's THE most optimal presentation but the reference to the Mi4K is apt because I generally regard UHD and BD capacity to be quite similar in terms of how much content (relative to UHD and HD) can be put onto them before things really start to suffer. Point being that while a two-disc version would be best, they put the whole movie on a single BD without overtly damaging it and I believe the same holds true for UHD.

Yes, Sony squeezed more refinement out of the dual disc Mi4K version but the regular BD was still a fabulous encode, all 3 3/4 hours of it with an average bitrate of just 22 Mb/s, for the same reasons as described above. The overture and intermission also take up several minutes of that quoted running time, during which the bitrate can drop away to minimal levels.

By my calcumalations they could use an average bitrate of 50 Mb/s and still have plenty of room on a 100GB for the Atmos audio and maybe one or two low bitrate dubs.

It's been an iTunes exclusive for a while now. I guess the exclusivity must be expiring.
