We both know that answer - NONE of the properly calibrated newer near reference projectors. I'm certain that the JVCs thrown onto ST100 fabric in a black velvet room will quickly put an end to nearly anyone's skepticism.

Finally, the notion that, what, 22" of screen height for LOA with 1:1 HDR is somehow legit is laughable. Ha. Sitting 3' away? Ok.

Hopefully we'll get original audio mix as well. Awaiting official press release...
You'd need them to find an uncut copy of the original theatrical release in order to get the original audio mix. The current version is a reconstruction with some of the dialogue rerecorded decades later.

Different studios, but I really hate the 7.1 mixes of 'The Sound of Music' and 'West Side Story' where the surrounds are supposed to be used sparingly and the soundstage to be wide; the 7.1 mixes are pure revisionisms and don't sound like 70mm/6-channel theatrical mixes at all.
There is no original sound mix for Lawrence anymore. Long lost, damaged beyond repair, or destroyed.

They can reproduce the original five screen channels if they use the Atmos mixing capabilities correctly that has Left and Right Extra Center fixed object positioning. Sony did this for a limited SDDS-8 theatrical run a while back when SDDS was a thing.

We shall see... or hear...

I read Fox had done an Atmos mix for 'Oklahoma!' which would replicate the original five front channel TODD-AO setup, but as I noted before, Atmos-ing, yes I used that as a verb, can alter the side/back wall/ceiling sourcing by adding sound that was originally never there in the first place. I'm all for light ambient liberal use of surround sound cues, and Sony for the most part is good at retaining an original mix and not going overboard, so I think Sony won't radically alter it, of course I'd assume there will also be 5.1 mix on the disc as well, if the 4K UHD can mirror the current 4K DCP I'll be a happy camper.

Eh, I'll take left centre and right centre folded into L+C and R+C as phantom channels, thankyouverymuch. Works like gangbusters on Spartacus and 2001.

I wonder if this will only be released over seas and not in the USA?

I agree with you, as great as 2001 was in some scenes such as those in the pod bay, for much of it I felt that I should be seeing more fine detail akin to what is on the 4k SDR stream of Lawrence, which even without HDR is off the charts for detail at times!

My local IMAX has screenings on Sept. 1st & 4th. Never seen this one on a big theater screen, only on home video formats from laserdisc all the way to my current box set on blu but I can only imagine it should look quite impressive in a theater.

I assume you are referring to the Fathom events showings in a theater with an IMAX auditorium, not actual IMAX screenings (like Blade Runner, 2001, and Apocalypse Now recently had). I know Fathom is showing it in 4K DCP (and I have tickets for Sept 1, have only seen it on an IPhone and TV so it should be great) but I would have loved if it got IMAX showings also, Blade Runner and 2001 in particular were mind blowing.

Yes, anyone who hasn't seen this on a big screen, don't miss an opportunity. If I could choose only one movie to ever appear on a theater screen again...

And if you have, see it again.

My best experience of this film was a 35mm print that was in very good condition. A few years ago I saw digital version but it was either satellite or the theater wasn’t projecting properly.

A 4K DCP should look very good. I’m taking someone who has never seen it

I HAD tickets to see this on Sunday. My dad decided to throw himself a birthday party at the exact time of the showing, so I cancelled. :/

Unfortunately my local cinema doesn't have those screenings... I'd have to drive out 45 minutes each way to go see it.

I’ve always desperately wanted to see a 65mm screening of this, but if it’s just digital projection, I don’t care - I’d rather watch the 4K disc at home. ESPECIALLY if it’s just a 2K IMAX showing; I regret going to see 2001 in that format.

Correct, my bad for saying IMAX, it is not being shown in my local IMAX auditorium. Getting my tickets as I type this. I wonder if a 4K UHD Blu-ray announcement isn't far off if this is hitting theaters.

If it’s DCP then no thanks.
