I always noticed this on the BD in various scenes. I was never sure if it's source related, or if Sony very slightly over-sharpened the disc. I wonder how these scenes look in 4K.

There are halos on some areas of extreme contrast but it seems like a source issue as the grain is still natural.

It really is something else. I've seen the Kaleidescape version; it is magnificent.

Will all of the bonus discs finally be available to the common man?

The UHD is supposed to be the ultimate release of this movie, it needs to have all the bonus material included at a not ridiculous price.

With any luck Sony will apply the same approach as Black Hawk Down and cram all the existing extras onto one mega bonus disc.

well, as of now there's no official press release, we don't even know anything about the UHD disc itself let alone bonus materials

The recent 70mm DTS prints are 4K to film out and some of the print i saw looked terrible.
The best way to see this film is a 70mm print from the 1989 restoration if you can find
one good enough to screen.

And then leave the bonus disc out in certain regions, for example Scandinavia. Thanks, but no thanks.

I saw a 4K DCP a couple years ago and it was stunning, all the way through.

The only way to tell if this is source related is to evaluate the negative, or at least a positive print from the negative. The screen captures you are looking at comes from a 4K scan (with all the artifacts that come from the scanning process) which has been downscaled to 1080p and then zoomed in to 300%.

All film is prone to halation to some extent, although this doesn't look like film based halation (where the halo extends into the darker area).

Ugh... Every time I see this thread pop up again it gets my hopes up that the film has finally been announced officially...

Yeah, Australia got that nonsense too. Same deal with Godzilla '98, they bundled it with the Mi4K BD which is barebones

There's a 4k digital version on VUDU. Maybe something will be announced soon?

The 4K version has been on Amazon for as long as they've offered 4K streaming.
