Yeah, they pretty much dummy proofed this set. It's pretty easy to recoup a lot of the cost of the set between selling the codes and selling the titles you don't want. I see it as a no brainer, |

It will Definitely be getting a solo release. I can wait. It's the Best one in that Box by far. Mr Smith is also a great Capra Classic. The rest I have No use for. Here is my version of what should have been in that box....It Happened One Night....From Here To Eternity.....On The Waterfront.....The Guns of Navarone.....Lawrence of Arabia....A Man For All Seasons. All Academy Award winners ! This is Box of Classics. This I would buy in a second. But they would never release a box with these titles. Too many Great movies in one set !

Sony should have a recall of Disc 1 of the 4K of "Lawrence of Arabia". Go to chapter 5 and see a scene just before Omar Sharif rides in that is totally washed out, almost without color. It looks terrible. This is NOT the way the film was in the theater, or even in television showings.
Am I the only one who notices this? It's not what Lean photographed! SONY PLEASE RECALL DISC 1 OF THE 4K! |

I have both but never watched the single disc. The JP BD split the film over two discs and was properly split at the intermission. I was quite pleased to learn the UHD was going to be split over two discs instead of trying to squeeze it onto a single 100 or 66 disc. |

I just finished the first disc of Lawrence and honestly I am not overwhelmed by it. This seems to be the old 4k restoration from 2012. The whole movie has a quite digital look.
For a movie shot on 65mm this is quite noisy and I don't mean grainy. The noise in the skies and deserts looks rather digital than analog. Further I am seeing constant ringing around objects and people. And when it comes to detail I would expect much more refined faces and costumes from a 65mm source. Most of the detail looks rather smooth. Don't get me wrong: It's not bad at all but it's definitely far away from being reference material. |

Yup. You need to list your equipment. That can have a lot to do with what you're seeing. Settings can be off, lack of calibration, etc. Many are experiencing a very, very nice image. |

Looking at the caps by Pyoko here, it looks pretty damn good to my eyes. It's not 100% perfect, as nothing is, and while the 2012 restoration is beautiful, a newer one could be better due to newer technology. Still, I don't see the need to complain about it when it looks as good as it does in those caps.

The "ringing" Rathbone mentioned is absolutely present, but as noted by others this is photo-chemical in nature (it's in the film itself) and is not the result of any digital tinkering. You will see it clearly during any high-contrast sequences (dark mountains against bright skies, etc). And yes, it also has lots of SonyGrain™ present -- so those expecting a totally pristine appearance might be in for a surprise. Would a modern scanner have yielded superior results? Sure -- but this still looks excellent and this is a movie from 1962.
I'm looking forward to comparing these results to SPARTACUS. |

Beautiful disc(s). Kind of a slog, though.
