1) There's a litany of posts where Geoff admits he has a morose manner.
2) He isn't out to provide "balance" . He gives a clinical technical analysis from his wealth of knowledge. How someone feels about that assessment isn't his fault. 3) He's not saying based on his analysis you should not buy something, or it should affect your viewing experience overall. He's well aware he picks up on things most people probably won't. |

2) Just how it isn't his fault how someone feels about his assessment, it's not my fault that I don't think his assessment is infallible. 3) I never claimed he has specifically suggested everyone NOT buy something but based on his wealth of knowledge, if one sees post after post of him picking apart a disc, one would be naturally-inclined to decide not to spend their money on it or at least question which assessment rings more true given that there are opposing viewpoints from his own. In the end, I make my own decision on what to buy and take these critiques at my discretion. But stating a desire to see more balanced reviews isn't being unreasonable. And again, if he's going to be rude to me, I'm not just going to take it. We can have differing views without him resorting to belittling me. I'm not going to press this further than I already have, though. I mean no disrespect to anyone here. Last edited by Kakihara; 07-08-2020 at 07:51 PM. |

As for the comparison, it is like 2 people running race, and one gets seriously smoked by the other despite having handicaps (like tons of language tracks, complete disc space not being utilized) and here one is actually looking for any sign that the loser did something special. Perhaps looking at one nanosecond of movement in a leg to say, see that stride was so much better (and yet they still lose)! When one see details for themselves that blow that argument apart, we get the "you are not seeing it my way, you are not reading, you are running off with it, how dare you zoom in!" Can one not see the contradiction much less the belittling? P.S. Scottishguy, we may not agree, but we sure agree on 2 points. Once Upon a Time in the West is a great film, and I was just finishing up the Sopranos on bluray finally. Love it! Last edited by slimjean; 07-08-2020 at 08:04 PM. |

Admittedly, after multiple direct comparisons of the SDR 4K stream and this UHD on my BenQ 4K projector, I can't deny the probability that a low-pass filter was applied here. It's not something I would have ever noticed had other eagle-eyed members not pointed to some very precise examples that I was able to replicate at home.
For the life of me though I just can't understand why it was necessary. Was this encode completed with a single disc in mind before Sony (rightfully) opted for two? Did they work from an existing, older encode that had artifacts already baked in instead of starting fresh from the full uncompressed source? It's still a gorgeous presentation IMO but it's also frustrating to know that my all-time most anticipated UHD title isn't *quite* all that it could be. Sony has released nothing but the most incredibly organic looking transfers on UHD up to this point. Given that Lawrence is without question the title selling this set to most people, one would think they would do everything within their power to give it the absolute finest, most purist-pleasing, cinephile wet-dream of a transfer possible. Still really like this release. Still think it's currently the best possible way to watch the film outside of a Dolby Cinema 4K screening. But also just totally stumped. |

Instead he goes into every Sony thread and says the same thing to get a reaction then gets upset when members like myself call him out. |

I would like to know why in my zoomed screenshots, and my experience do you actually lose quality, yet Sony is the one that is called "softened"? I am not doubting your experience, but particularly the sky scenes seemed to be riddled with it. |

I don't see how he was belittling you. Geoff has kicked my butt hard on a number of subjects. You can cry about it, or just leave your ego at the door and say thanks, learn and move on. |

Yes, the artifacts are definitely there and more noticeable on a projection system. They’ve always been there, though honestly for a 4 year old compressed stream it still looks solid. The audio is such a huge downgrade though that that alone will probably keep me from returning to any streaming version. Lawrence is a film that absolutely needs lossless. |

Furthermore, many of us find it hard to talk with you on any given day about how beautiful the blue sky looks in HDR Dobly+ Vision because you will ultimately insist that the sky should actually be purple and that we’re all seeing it wrong anyway because the analog laserdisc (with the color cranked up 25 notches) looks better. Anyway, I don’t own an OLED so what do I even know about anything? ![]() |
