My thoughts exactly regarding the sharper detail on the SDR stream. I'm glad you got to watch it.

Finally it is happening and to be honest I don't have any issues with the steelbook artwork. I am fine with it.

Anyone of you please confirm if the standard blu ray that came with the Colombia classics vol 1 was region A locked or region free?

Do you think the 4K SDR stream is an entirely different master? Perhaps the HDR layer is creating such a difference in the picture? I can't imagine they would create two separate masters for the 4k presentation of this film, but I'm only speculating. Just curious as to why there would be such (seemingly) significant differences.

It’s the same 4K restoration underneath, if that’s what you mean by “master”, but various things are happening to the HDR version: 1) it’s had some filtering of high frequency detail, 2) the grain is MUCH more prominent in HDR, 3) the HDR is also exposing flaws in the restoration that were basically invisible in SDR. And none of this helped by what looks like slightly iffy compression to disc, as despite the movie being spread over 2 discs Sony stuffed a load of extra language tracks on there rather than max out the video bitrate.

Does it still look verr naice on UHD? Oh yes. People are going to love it. But it’s much ‘grittier’ looking than I ever expected and that’ll always throw me, especially when compared to other large format shows on UHD like My Fair Lady which retain the gloss and pin-sharp detail I’d associate with 65mm. Different film is different and Lawrence’s negative was in far worse shape to be fair, and if the SDR stream of Lawrence didn’t have that extra lick of HF information then I’d have been happy to chalk the HDR’s ‘grittiness’ down to the poor source material, but that the SDR stream doesn’t have that filter is a niggle that won’t leave me alone.

Been confirmed many times -- every BD in VOL is Region Free.
All bu Social Network in VOL 2 is Region Free.

Yes, that is what I meant by "master." I guess I was thinking more in music terms. Just to be clear, when you refer to filtering of high frequency detail, does that create a "smoothing" at the transition between different pixel values (i.e. the place in an image where a red shirt meets the blue sky). Something like this? Or am I way off base?

I don't know how to couch it in such precise terms but the smallest details seem to end up with a larger radius of pixels than they do in the 4K SDR stream.

That's so odd. I wonder if HDR was turned off on the player would the UHD disc look the same as the stream?

i have heard people mention Bull Moose previously, but i have no experience. i see the media mail may take quite a few days. generally, how is the shipping? "quick?" safe?

any input would be appreciated. i took a chance on Diabolik with Dune (1984) and it was an "ok" experience. i should have read the cancelation info more clearly. separately, not their issue, but even after being told i was "on the list, and it would be shipped" three separate times i still do not have my replacement disc (4 months later).

thanks

Bull Moose is highly recommended. They are very reputable and a step above that other large retailer which starts with the letter 'A'. I've never had a bad experience.

As far as shipping, media mail is media mail, no matter who ships the item. Bull Moose does provide tracking and usually gets your order out in a day or two.

Now back to the Lawrence of Arabia 4k thread...

Is there any chance this will be a new encode like Sony has done with Labyrinth and Ghostbusters?

Those new releases added Dolby Vision. LoA already has that, so I’d be surprised.
