I have purchased from Deep Discount off and on for two decades. They have some great deals, but indeed you have to be willing to pay a risk premium in return. There are other outlets that are "safer" but more costly. It depends on your risk tolerance, just as it does when investing in bonds vs. index funds vs. stocks. DD also has a comparatively small inventory of items to buy vs. Amazon, the behemoth.

This is right now number 1 at the Amazon best-sellers AND "most desired" charts of Military & War film releases. It is number one of those two charts at the same time.

Sony's strategy works.

Clearly a lot more love has gone into it when compared to all the horrendous looking cover art those big studios have been putting out lately.

Invalid analogy. Funds and stocks are the asset of transaction, not the market dealer of transaction. You should be comparing a shady broker to DD, not the product / assets themselves (and films on physical media are not the volatile / risky product that stocks and bonds are).

Being a specialized retailer should mean they do it better, not worse. It's what they do. The other small retailers that do it right prove this.

But this still doesn't work in comparison, because Amazon screws up all the time as well—they just rectify it properly. At their expense. They partnership with a buttload of local drop off points to make it free and easy.

However, you're probably still going to be accepting of this level of risk—do as you will.

Of course it does.

And don't be surprised when they put Columbia Classics Vol1 back into print and people buy it for 149.99 for the other titles, including another copy of lawrence of arabia

There's a minimum Sony has to make in order to make it worthwhile to reprint vs how many they sell and then there is inventory storage costs etc.

It's more logical for them to release standard editions of these titles since all of the artwork is already made including slipcovers. It was easy for ebayers to just slip the titles out of the box and sell them individually.

If a title from the box seems really hot Sony may do a steelbook first then the standard release. Sony must have had a bunch of empty steelbooks in the warehouse or Sony actually reprinted them.

Despite declining physical sales there are some tiltles that will be released in 4K and will stay in print. Eventually Sony WILL release a standard version. In reality this title never really went out of print on 4K, it just had periods where inventory was scarce and then Sony printed up a whole new batch.

What is up with Sony doing this with the boxset titles and keeping the standalones OOS or simply never making standalones?
Have you been able to get the UHD of Lawrence Of Arabia since then?

Placed my order with DeepDiscount on Friday night, 5 items which included this Steelbook.

3 of the items including this were in stock but just got shipping notification and only 2 items shipped and surprises surprise this item didn’t and now it backordered. Can only assume they have over sold and shall await this we can not fulfil your order email….

Exactly? Actually? I can’t answer that because it all depends on the viewer. Sit far enough away and most compression problems disappear. At the end of the day you need to watch it for yourself instead of fixating on what I say.

I just meant on your scale of discs with less than perfect encoding.

Ive only seen the caps on capsaholic but the UHD looks like the same scan used for the older blu ray. The grain kinda has this old scan look, it appears quite harsh, almost like some sharpening has been applied to it.
