Reminds me of Films at Home's bad review of Inglourious Basterds, most likely because it had HDR10+ only while his set was a DV-only Sony. That's why I prefer sets & players with both, first Vizio & now Hisense both fed by a UB820.
matbezlima was making a completely different point, but the implication you have here that Vizio and Hisense are somehow the way to get accurate HDR is just ludicrous.

Additional note: Of the near-500 4k movies I have, 9 of them have HDR10+ without DV. I don't think it is an issue worth buying a mediocre TV over.

The 4K disc is sourced from the same 2012 master used to make the blu-ray, but touched up to adress flaws that became more apparent with HDR.

Depends on your definition of "mediocre". Sounds like you think certain brands are automatically "mediocre" regardless of model range. I doubt matbezlima was saying all Samsungs are "mediocre", just the one he was describing. There are "mediocre" TVs of every brand; I named those two because they're the ones I've owned recently. Indeed, my new Hisense 65U8K is among their best models -- definitely better than the Vizio M55Q7-H1 it replaced.

I wasn't attacking Samsung especifically indeed, my point was about the regular 4K HDR TV of all brands, and how mediocre they are for HDR content. I just happened to use a Samsung TV as an example. I could have used an average LG TV and had the same results, and so on.

The HDR and color grading are huge improvements, easily the selling points of the 4K disc, as there isn't really a lot of extra detail in the resolution bump, and you don't get super fine grain. About audio quality, I don’t know.

Correct, but his question was about the regular BDs. The two movie BDs of those three are identical to the 2012 release. The bonus features BD is identical to the "corrected" Columbia Classics Vol. 1 bonus disc, combining on one disc the regular 2012 bonus disc plus the additional bonus disc in the 2012 Limited Collectors Edition boxset.

My point is that since the 4K disc uses the same master as the 2012 blu-ray release, then it wouldn't make sense to update the blu-ray with a new transfer, because there isn't a new transfer. I think his question was about the transfer.

Look, I'm not attacking you or saying any given thing is good or bad in general, as everyone has a budget and perception that drives them to one vs the other. I'm arguing that your implied logic is not valid and using your recommended TV brand (notably without a model specified) to prove it: the consensus on most reviews put the "best" Hisense models overall in the value category for rankings of TVs. This would make it so-so, mid-range, or mediocre compared to the "best" model from a few other brands, and therefore suitable to counter your argument.

Again, your logic is unsound. In the context of matbezlima's point (that inaccurate HDR presentation can make some reject HDR as worse than SDR), buying a Vizio or Hisense simply because they support the two dynamic HDR formats is not a guarantee to reverse that situation.

That's it. Take that all FWIW. I have no skin in this game and will kindly let it roll if you still disagree.

Rock on.

According to the article "WARNER SETS THE SANDMAN: S1 FOR BLU-RAY & 4K, PLUS SONY’S LAWRENCE OF ARABIA 4K IS COMING BACK IN PRINT & CARNIMEO’S CASE OF THE BLOODY IRIS (1972) IN 4K!" by Bill Hunt in The Digital Bits, published in September 11:

"Here’s some good news: I’ve officially confirmed with the good people over at Sony Pictures Home Entertainment that their fantastic 4K Ultra HD Steelbook release of David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia (1962) will be coming back into stock at all your favorite retailers in the next month or two. I know a LOT of you out there have asked me about it. And in fact, it’s been popping in and out of stock on Amazon over the weekend (we expect that to continue) so keep checking this link to pre-order it over the coming days."

So to you, "mediocre" means anything other than top of the line OLEDs? Yeah, right.

I posted my Vizio & Hisense model numbers earlier, plus my Hisense model number is in my signature.

My order from Amazon originally said it would ship November 1st. It updated today to reflect it would now arrive October 11th. The odd thing is, do I need this? I have the Columbia Classics one. I don’t have The Bridge on the River Kwai 4K nor The Guns of Navarone 4K. I guess I’m thinking I want a matched set of steelbook art that drove this purchase (I had been contemplating buying the other two so I think these steelbooks sealed the deal).
