Is this the future of physical media? Get it (overpay for it) while it’s hot?

Hopefully not but with some titles it does seem to be this way. I got EXTREMELY lucky a few months back and scored the Steelbook of LOA just casually perusing the Wal-Mart website. $28.99. No kidding. Added to cart and bought. Went back that night to see if they were out and they sure were. 100% luck.

I hope others can find copies of this for a fair price. I HATE the damned capitalists that infringe on our hobby.

I got mine by placing a backorder on importcds.com for about $30, which they honored when they eventually got some back in stock.

I still want a replacement for $27.18 that UPS mangled during delivery because Amazon couldn't be bothered to put a steelbook in a box and didn't have stock at the time for an exchange.

wow just got lucky and ordered one from amazon.com just now. on amazon.ca they are 130 dollars. on .com it was 32 dollars USD

The description for the movie says that this is a frequently returned item. Are people returning it because they cant sell their copies for crazy prices so they return it before the 30 days are up?

Not hot: I bought this on the first run back in March of 2022 (delivery in June) and paid $30. The first run of the steel went OOP shortly after the official release date and shot up in price with resellers over the next 6 months or so, reaching mythical status as everyone assumed that was it. (Like the surprise limited nature of that Ghostbusters box set) Of course, it has had numerous reprints since then, and pops up in stock regularly, at the same price. While it was "limited" for that first year, it is seemingly being released in batches now.

An element that has been discussed in a few threads lately is that we probably are done with the days of a studio producing a massive stock of discs for a retailer to sit on the shelf, eventually drop in price, and (maybe) sell off in 10 years. We are seeing more releases produced in smaller batches, not just from boutiques, and initial runs sell out, creating a delay waiting for the next batch. (I think many recent releases are showing this to be true) I would not be surprised if they went full MOD on it all at some point. As collecting physical media becomes more niche and retailers are backing out of the old model of buying up huge production runs to fill shelves, this all seems like relatively normal market reactions and behavior to me. Studios are responding to the recognition that 4k is a premium product with low volume. I think we consumers need to adjust our expectations with it.

Full circle: If you are referring to "overpaying" as "buying from a third-party," all I can say is be patient and wait for the next batch restock. Don't give in to FOMO and buy from resellers. If you're expecting an overstock bargain sale like times of old, and anything close to "full" price is what you consider "overpaying," then the current trend is showing you might be out of luck.

I'm going to guess it's a situation similar to mine where Amazon can't be bothered sending a steelbook in a box so it's damaged in transit in a bubble mailer. There are quite a few pictures in the reviews of bent or dented steelbooks because shipping them in bubble mailers is the least responsible shipping method they could do. Amazon simply does not care how your purchase is shipped nor the condition in which it is delivered to you.

Possibly. I have ordered quite a few steelbooks from both amazon.ca and .com and only one came dented and broken. That was Heavy Metal from amazon.ca

They had no more stock so they said they would do a return and refund or let me keep the movie for half price. So I kept it. Ordered one from .com and returned the broken one for a refund.

£29.99. It was the standard Zavvi rigid cardboard envelope, I've never had any issues with them thankfully.

I wonder why this never got a regular release? The only reason I wanted to blind buy this movie is my dad once told me it was one of his favourites. Lets see, old man.

Sony is selling a lot of their catalog 4K titles as bundles so they can charge $150+ for them. This was part of the first collection.

They are slowly giving out individual releases, but inconsistently and as limited editions, presumably so people break down and buy the box sets instead of waiting indefinitely for whichever movies they want.

Oh crazy, and it looks like people are trying to resell them for insane prices.

Now available again. Put my order in, came to £45 with shipping to UK so not quite the £30 zavvi price I should have been able to pay but it’ll do. I’ve actually never seen this but recently became aware that a famous piece of film soundtrack music was the theme from *this* film, which ever since learning that I’ve been very keen on getting a watch in. A local repertory cinema is getting a 70mm print in to screen in August for the first time in 5 years so got that booked in with a friend (who’s favourite film it is) which I’ll save for my first watch. Glad to have secured the disc though, fingers crossed it survives shipping
