Yeah, looks like they have price matched it, so the Nordic edition costs roughly the same as importing the US/UK edition from those countries after also adding the 25% VAT and shipping cost.

Anyway, I'm going with the Nordic edition, to support the local 4K BD market, and also I prefer to have the local edition if there is one available.

So what should I go with here? The 4K in Dolby Vision or the blu-ray? I've heard conflicting opinions. I've sampled the 4K and definitely notice some weird issues present. What's the overall consensus? I've seen the film plenty of times before, but never watched the 4K.

4K SDR download if you can get it.

I really hope we can eventually get caps of the 4K SDR version from Kaleidescape.

My options are my options. Are you insinuating I should buy it? Where is that version available?

Of the two presented, what are you going with?

There is no question the UHD is better than the BD. The color gamut and HDR alone is a big plus. This issue is the filtering applied which the downloaded version doesn't have and it shows more detail as a result. However, I am fine enough with the UHD.

What filtering? Any DNR applied is pretty light and nothing on the level of T2.

No one said T2. lol Seriously, there was VERY long discussion about this and screencaps showing the differences. The UHD was unfortunately filtered. Old news.

I forget whether I asked this in this thread or somewhere else. For anyone who's seen the 1984 Beta, VHS, LD, or CED (the three-hour rerelease cut), is there any footage or any scenes in there that are not in the 1989/2012 cut of the film?

I looked at screenshots and didn't see any heavy filtering. I also actually watched the 4K in person and didn't notice this.

All credits go to RESET_9999:

And here you can find his screenshots of the 4K SDR Kaleidescape version!

It's weird how the MoviesAnywhere stream got a free pass on the grain, while every other version was nerfed.

Should be noted that while MA streams do retain more grain than most digital platforms, they also exhibit a lot of encoding artifacts, as RESET_9999 / TbeRw01 himself pointed out.

Wish they would release a normal 4K version as well, and not just a steelbook.

The 4K SDR Kaleidescape version was not nerfed in grain and detail, and it doesn't have the encoding artifacts of MA's 4K HDR version. The UHD loses to both versions in grain and detail.

They did! 5 years ago, part of the first Columbia Classics 4k Vol. 1 set. But yeah, I know what you mean. Weird how they pick and choose what to release separately and whether or not it be a steelbook or regular release, etc. I got lucky since I've had the set, but I have some friends who would like the movie without paying those crazy prices for the steelbook.

High frequency filtering, likely for grain reduction, just not as heavy-handed at T2.

Umm... yeah it was, did you not look at the screencaps? The Kaleidescape one is definitely filtered in comparison to the MA stream, which is not HDR btw, it's SDR as well.

I'm saying what I'm saying because I looked at the screencaps. The Kaleidescape 4K SDR version has finer grain and detail than the UHD.

MA is misleading with the extra messy encoding noise. It almost always has more grain than any source. The grain looks better on KS, especially in motion.
