Hmm, 2001 is a hard one to start your friends on if they aren't into old film. I tried the same with some friends a few years ago and to be fair, 2001 has not aged well in many respects and is not a good introduction for people into older movies. Lawrence is a lot better for that I reckon.

'2001' is old but it is also timeless. It is NOT a movie for everyone. The first time I experienced it was in college several years ago in a class. Most of the students didn't like it. I watched the whole thing a bit afterwards on my own with huge screen and surround sound. I'll be very honest, I don't love it in the normal sense of entertainment but it is still amazing within the prism of cinematic art. It is a giant and one of the most influential films of our time.

'Lawrence of Arabia' is also one of the greatest films ever made too but it is far more character-driven than '2001', which gives it a stronger appeal for viewers instantly.

To be fair, I didn't like 2001 on my first viewing. After multiple viewings I really like it now. So I kinda, get some people's negative reaction to the movie. It also took multiple viewings to appreciate Blade Runner, it's now my second favorite movie of all time.

I haven't seen Lawrence of Arabia yet. I'm waiting for the definitive 4K release before watching it.
