This thread ruined the UHD for me before I even watched it. Cheers, nice one. Kids are crying.

How exactly does this happen? It's almost like they put the wrong version on the UHD disc?

Thanks folks. Looks like the 4K SDR STREAM is better than the 4K HDR UHD. Am I right?

If yes, will wait until this drops to a tenner. In no hurry as got many other things to worry about.

I don't think so, the compression on the stream seems quite bad which would almost certainly make the UHD a much more solid experience.

But the UHD is undeniably "dumbed down" and not as good as it could have been. Whether this was done on purpose or by accident is impossible to tell, but I wonder if there's any way to contact Sony about this so it would reach the right people.

Might the DV be putting out more nits which is resulting in a loss of detail?

It's so weird that it really strikes me as an accident. Like the 1080p master somehow got the UHD encode at the end of a long day. It looks like an upscaled 1080p version.

Haha, yep! I did the downscale-upscale test to the UHD. It's 100% the 1080p version.

Andreas' original cap:

The same cap, downscaled to 1080p, then upscaled back to 4k.

I smell mistake.

Thank you to Geoff for the idea

I think the theory that they were trying to initally cram this on one BD100 makes sense and later moving to 2 discs once more dub and sub tracks got added could explain why the encoding is not as good as it should of been which is quite disappointing.

I mean has anyone tested it in HDR 10?

Depends on which streaming version they're looking at. The earlier post claimed the 4K streaming version was SDR, but Vudu's version now has HDR10 & DV; MA's version has HDR but not DV.

We shall wait and see when the British ones come out. But there's now no official release date for them. Maybe Sony knows they've screwed up. And are just waiting for the storm.

It is very odd. I mean the restorations efforts of the film have become legendary and yet the f'ing stream is showing more detail than the disc (?!).

Which is why I'm saying perhaps it's how hot the disc is. The stream if it does has HDR might be less hot. Hence more detail.

There's no image information in the Dolby Vizione "FEL" layer so that's not the issue here.

The theory that they may have pre-filtered it to help the compression and prevent it ending up like the stream is kind of plausible but in my opinion they should have been able to make out OK without it, so I still think a mistake is equally likely.

This was probably one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen on screen. Floored me.

I wish this did it justice. The luxurious warmth and glow was so intensely orange and gold, every ripple of wave and shadowy counterpart visible through the light, and the shadowy contrast + clarity made it seem almost three dimensional.

Sadly, my tablet camera just turns it into bloom, loses the richness and softens everything. You've got to see it.

This UHD is incredibly gorgeous. Period. Smokes the standard blu from every angle. The HDR grade is impactful in all areas that I hoped it would be and the newest sound mix is noticeably fuller IMO.

Not discrediting the possibility that some mild filtering may have been applied at some point during the workflow, but what I’m seeing on my setup is not well represented by those screencaps.

When I did my heatmaps I also made a comment about exactly this scene, it is jaw-droppingly beautiful.
