It feels like every other page of this thread til today was someone bumping it to ask if it will ever be released as a standalone?

I’ll get it because I’ve been waiting for a stand-alone release, but I wish it didn’t have to be a steelbook.

Preordered. Not missing out on this 4K for a second time.

Ohhhhhh myyyyyyy god!

When will a stand-alone 4K be released ad nauseum!!!!!

June 7 B!tches in a steelbook with a cartoon cover.

Steelbook? Cartoon cover. I don’t want the 4K that bad, I’ll wait for regular packaging and if it doesn’t come with a slipcover you can forget it.

Be careful what you agonizingly wish for…you just might get it but not in the package you want

As I posted in the steelbook thread, glad I sold Volume One.

Let me state this right here, all of the titles will eventually be released in 4K.

I mean they're already out in 4K, but I assume you mean individual releases lol.

And in regards to that, I'm not so sure, actually. We're nearing two years since Columbia Classics Vol. 1 and the only title that's received a standard release is Dr. Strangelove and now Lawrence of Arabia, and only because this year was the film's 60th. Out of 12 movies we have 2 that got separate releases. I can maybe see some of them getting released individually (like Taxi Driver), but I wouldn't count on all of them. I don't think an individual UHD of Sense & Sensibility, for example, is high on their list of priorities.

All of the artwork and mastering has been done. Could be MOD or they license to a company and Sony manufactures the product for the licensee. Strip out bluray and digital. These titles were important to Sony as they put them into these box sets. They are just doing a slow roll out.

And yes I meant physical. Kept the digital when I sold my box.

What do you mean? From Volume 1,
https://www.blu-ray.com/Jerry-Maguire/18241/#Releases
https://www.blu-ray.com/Mr-Smith-Goe...9353/#Releases
https://www.blu-ray.com/Dr-Strangelo...2260/#Releases
https://www.blu-ray.com/Gandhi/19438/#Releases
and now
https://www.blu-ray.com/Lawrence-of-...8109/#Releases
have all been released individually on 4K UHD. Partially in Europe only, but that shouldn't matter - they're easily available and region-free.

That only leaves
https://www.blu-ray.com/A-League-of-...4213/#Releases
that does not have an announced 4K UHD release yet anywhere in the world.

That's 1 out of 6, and even that one may get an individual release sometime soon.

The cover art is half-assed and deeply disappointing (the current home video age’s fascination with cartoony pop art is embarrassing in the now, to say nothing of 10-20 years down the road in hindsight), and it’s downright tragic when juxtaposed with my 50th Anniversary Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray’s packaging, but I’m just so cheesed with sunshiny joy that I can finally buy LoA separate from that damnable ill-thought boxed set of random movies, I just can’t be bothered to give much of a shit.

I don't really get why people seem to think that these sets are "random" (and this isn't necessarily directed at anyone in particular, but I hear it mentioned a lot on this forum when these sets are discussed). They're called "Columbia Classics" because these sets feature classic films from Columbia's library. I think it's pretty clear what their intention was, I don't think there's anything ill-conceived about it. Personally, I've loved the selection of films in each set and the book that comes with it isn't some garbage with the usual (useless) filmographies and bios, there's some really good information about the production of each film, analysis and - most importantly - detailed information about each restoration. For about $100 each, these sets were well worth it. That being said, I can see some people not being interested in every title included in these collections, so it's good that they're getting standalone releases, but I don't think these collections are ill-thought or random at all. They're now two of my favourite box sets in my collection.

I think the random comes from the fact that although they are Columbia titles, there isn't a common theme or thread. Taxi Driver couldn't be further on a taste scale from Sense and Sensibility or Oliver. That doesn't mean there aren't people who don't like both, but they are still odd pairings.

In an age where physical media is on a decline, asking people to buy a set of 6 films that they only might want 1 or 2 of kills the purchase for most, and on a format that still is pretty niche, is a big ask. Especially if the sales numbers determine future releases/singles.

As we have seen, a few of them have gotten or will be getting single releases, but your layperson probably won't know that and will pass on the set. Set 2 had lots of appeal to me, so I grabbed it, but still ended up with 2 movies I have no interest in.

I personally don't mind if they keep making them, but at the same time, I don't want to purchase a set of 6 films if I only want one or 2 of them. And while I don't HAVE to purchase them, I also shouldn't have to buy 6 movies to get one, especially since the companies are the ones who need us, not the other way around.

I take it from a different point of view. I see it more as a sampler of Columbia Classics. I have found that I’ve enjoyed movies I never would have given a chance previously had it not been for this collection. Additionally, I’ve now been willing to dive into more movies in a particular genre, era, or featuring particular actors too. In the end, I spend more money in more diverse categories than had I just gotten the movies that were my bread and butter. I find that a compelling reason to create a collection of diverse, unique movies that provide the opportunity for one to expand their tastes. Heck, I even came to enjoy The Social Network, which I originally couldn’t stand.

And, hey, man, that’s awesome and I dig that for you, but it’s when the rest of us are forced to buy shit we don’t want to get the shit we do that my bitter button gets pressed. It’s one thing for me to maybe discover MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON deserves my attention after all, but quite another for me to have to have the grating, insufferable, already-seen-it-and-despise-it JERRY MAGUIRE on my shelf to get access to films I consider worthy.

I just disagree with the mindset that the films have nothing in common or that the set lacks a common theme. The "theme" is that these are classic films from the Columbia Pictures library that defined generations. They literally say it in their ad for the first set. I'd say that's a pretty legit theme. Why do they need to all be of the same genre or of the same type? We already have so many sets like that.

And sure, some people have waited for the standalone releases, but I would hardly say that asking people to buy a set of 6 films where they might have wanted only 1 or 2 "kills it for most". Clearly it didn't, considering how quickly the first volume sold out and the fact that Sony even released a second one. So, I don't think they're exactly losing a significant demographic because some people may not like a couple of the films in each set. Hell, people on here buy multiple copies of the same damn film (myself included), so I really don't buy the argument that a ton of people suddenly didn't wanna dish out $100 for 6 UHDs. That's a little over $16.50 per film. And how many people constantly blind buy titles? Sony even asked fans to VOTE for the films that appeared in the second volume. If that's not catering to collectors/film enthusiasts, then I really don't know what to tell you.

I get that, I just think that maybe releasing them solo and the set would be a nicer option. There are still titles from Vol. 1 that don't have releases, so if someone JUST got into the format, they have no way other than eBay etc to acquire them. That's my main problem. I definitely would not have gotten Vol. 2 if it weren't so damn cheap, I definitely would not have at MSRP

the Columbia classic s sets are about $100 on release for 6 movies individually packaged vs 1 at $30. They are all titles with some demand and popularity. Not like they're pairing LoA with 5 Stone Cold Steve Austin movies or made for video horror films.
