I think the reason why Kaleidescape hasn’t been cracked is primarily a lack of desire from doing so. In 99.999999% of films, why bother ripping it from Kaleidescape if you can just rip it from an UHD? You won't see hackers spending effort to crack Kaleidescape just for one movie, even if it is Lawrence Of Arabia.

Oh trust, I currently have a 16TB drive synced to my Plex and Infuse media servers. Streams files directly to my AppleTV at full quality (w/ lossless audio!) without a hitch.

As I said before, one day I’d like to backup my entire collection @ 1:1 quality but that’s a ways off as it would take 100+ TB just to hold what I currently own. When that much data storage becomes both easily affordable and available on a single device then (insert company) will have my attention. lol

I’m confused with all this new compression talk: is this a reprint of the existing product SKU or a new (re-release) version or do we not know yet?

We do not know yet, but it's far more likely a reprint.

There are probably less than a few thousand people on earth who would be willing to pay 20K for what Kaleidoscape offers. I doubt they’ve come anywhere close to that in terms of actual units sold. As you say, most people interested in a DRM free copy will either find a disc rip or make one themselves.

Not sure you can create a custom cover for a steelbook?

Is there a retailer listing for the reissue yet?
The link that started this convo seems to be dead now.

Not with video, no. That’s the thing that annoys me the most. For all the issues I have with the filtering and how the HDR badly exposes some of the restoration work it’s the squinky compression that stings because it just shouldn’t have been like that. It wasn’t split over two discs to max out the image quality, it was split over two discs so they could cram in a zillion audio tracks and although the average video bitrate is still respectable enough the grain just can’t cope in some scenes.

In a way it’s a shame this was issued with Dobly first time around as that would’ve given Sony an excuse to re-encode it for a DV reissue, but as it’s got it already then there’s zero chance of it being reauthored for any subsequent editions.

Unless they do a Superbit 4K later down the line, like they've done for previous formats. It'll be on 3 discs.

I wouldn't say zero chance, who knows what happens 5, 10, 15, 20 years from now (hope it doesn't take anywhere near that long, my point is just the positive side of Murphy's Law). If this doesn't ever get re-authored, maybe they could do a new transfer altogether, but it's hard to see that happening in the next few years.

It was also overstuffed with audio tracks. The actual video encode is in total 100 GB.

I think, in essence, these Sony steelbook/DV releases are to UHD BD what "Mastered in 4K" was to BD and "Superbit" was to DVD.

Imagine having a 16 TB hard drive fail and having to rip all those movies again after figuring out which ones they were. Or imagine the 100+ TB being a RAID that gets corrupted and having to rip EVERYTHING again.

The video encode is smaller. With the English 5.1 and Atmos it is 99 to 100 GB.

That’s the point: those numbers INCLUDE the numerous audio tracks which take up something close to 20 Mb/s average on their own. And even as they are, audio and all, there’s ~35 GB of space left unoccupied across both discs. It’s a weird one.

As WG said, both parts of the main video encode +English Atmos would just about fit into a 100 GB disc which shows how non-optimal the video encode really is.

Always the one to bring down the mood and be negative.

What you unnecessarily said is just the obvious logic that leads to the need of backups, if one can do them. I try to have as much as possible duplicated in the two external HDs I have.
