7.1 magnitude EQ moments ago near Ridgecrest CA. It was stronger and rolled longer here than the previous 6.4. Predicting more significant structural damage near the epicenter. Holy cow.

We felt an aftershock just a couple minutes later that was just minor, but still could be felt.

Read a news article just this morning that only about 1 million homeowners in California have the optional Earthquake Authority insurance. It’s affordable where I live and we have it, but in the L.A. area article said it would be $2,000 or more.

EDIT: now calling it a 6.9 quake. Still a MAJOR quake.
EDIT2: Revised back up to 7.1. Experts saying ~10x more powerful than the 6.4 quake.

yep and even though 6.4 -> 6.9 increase doesn’t sound like much, keep in mind the magnitude scale is logarithmic
epicenter probably in same region as above (NAWS China Lake)

only overnighted in S.D. for the 4th
i’m already back up in the L.A. area (work), up here with the revised 7.1 the chandelier swayed, etc.
will be going back down to S.D. again in a week or so for longer

Yes; it was first announced as a 7.1 Magnitude, then briefly downgraded to 6.9 Mag, and now finally as a 7.1 "mainshock" earthquake. The 4th of July one was a 6.4 "foreshock" earthquake. Since then (the 4th) there has been approximately 5,000+ aftershocks.

The 7.1 Mag of yesterday was felt as far as Mexico.
