Completely agree. When was the last time they even released a Samurai film?

I disagree wholeheartedly. I think they have the most varied slate of films of any of the boutique labels and they seem to try to get at least one film from every significant filmmaker in their collection.

Besides, CONTEXT is King. I'm not complaining about Criterion's choice of content, I'm complaining about how they treat their content w/ref to the technicalities of encoding it to disc.

Which other boutique label is less myopic? Kino maybe but they don’t release as many non-English or non-studio films. Arrow is definitely less varied IMHO. Eureka overlaps quite a lot with Criterion already.

Shout Factory is pretty varied as a whole. Horror, drama, anime/animation, family, television, and more. Shout is probably one of the more varied boutique labels.

Not in terms of foreign language films and classic older films (ie pre 1970).

True, but that's what the other labels are for. It's better for labels to focus on their own brand of film releasing than trying to fully one up on the competition.

My CC would be much smaller without those Samurai Movies....so....

But yes, i also think Criterion is kinda overrated. They keep releasing movies i have never heard about but everyone pretends that they have waited for this release for years and now they losing their shit and blablablablabla....just shut up.

So they're overrated because your knowledge of films isn't up to par?

(is Fury Road mainstream enough for you or even that is too "hipsterish"?)

Fury Road is great. But great movies like "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" are probably to mainstream for Criterion....which is sad.

Don't get me wrong, im really glad for the releases of Dead Man, The Silence of The Lambs, Thief (even that the Arrow is superior), The Graduate, Two-Lane Blacktop and especially Le Samourai (despite the Asbach Uralt transfer). But lately i have the feeling they only care about movies only real genre die hard fans know...or movie we don't necessarly need as CC.....like The Irishman.

I just miss some kind of variety.

On the back of each Criterion release is this message:

The Criterion Collection is dedicated to gathering the greatest films around the world and publishing them in editions of the highest quality...

The greatest, not the most popular or well know (though of course those do overlap sometimes), and many times the greatest movies are often not the most popular movies. And I just love that you assume that they're pretending on being excited of getting a high quality release of an overlooked film that they legitimately like; no one is pretending because there are film fans more open minded and knowledgeable than you or me. Just because you haven't heard or know about a film does not make it worthless to release or that it doesn't fit in the collection. That ideal is just childish.

Who exactly is "we"? Don't you mean... You?

And variety? Perhaps have a look at CC's catalogue. You'll see variety there. From Ingmar Bergman to Godzilla... I'd call that variety.

I get a feeling that Criterion has some good news in store for us regarding Martin Scorsese in the coming times.

They've been rumored to have "Mean Streets", "Italianamerican", and "After Hours" for a while. "Bringing Out the Dead" has been on a lot of wishlists for a long time, too.

We know "The Irishman" is coming.

Now, we hear that Thelma Schoonmaker recently mentioned restoring Scorsese's student films.

Very interesting for fans of the director.

So, their releases are either not popular enough, or they're too popular. It seems like you're the one with the narrow view of what Criterion should release, not them.
