In fairness that site doesn't specifically advise against the general public wearing masks. It says they don't need to and emphasizes the importance of good hygiene in conjunction with wearing one.

Whatever. I, personally, think it looks really stupid. So I refuse to wear one.

Completely agree with all of this. I'll be 50 this year, so I guess I'm in "Generation X". I'm glad that I did some travelling when I was younger, partied & "sowed my wild oats" somewhat, and definitely lived life to some extent, etc. I.e., though I now wish I had done a lot more, at least I did some things that I wanted to do.

However, I really feel bad for the the younger folks/kids out there who haven't fully lived their life yet. Because, due to this pandemic the way people interact with each other (socializing, dating, etc.), travelling/vacations, the way businesses/corporations operate, etc. will be completely changed forever - and not for the better.

Of course in a proper situation, they'd go to the hospital and be put on a ventilator, and hopefully pull through. Some city hospitals are overwhelmed right now. In my state there aren't too many reported cases yet. It's certainly nothing like New York. So I think it's at least possible if I can't breath and I went to the hospital they might actually have a ventilator available.
I completely see your point, but I for one refuse to go on a ventilator to help me breathe. If you got on a ventilator you may need to be on this for the rest of your life, and I refuse to live that way. So, If I get this & have these symptoms I guess I'm screwed. And, even if I was OK with going to a hospital because of this there is no guarantee they would have enough ventilators to go around, anyway.

That being said, apparently a lot of folks that are getting this are asymptomatic.

Doesn't really matter right now anyway. The main reason for not recommending them for the general public is so that people don't go gobbling them up to wear, creating an even bigger shortage for healthcare workers. There is still a big shortage of masks just for them, much less the general public. Those other countries that wear them are fortunate they they already had mask manufacturers, so they have enough supply for the most part.

The shop I have has a lot of sawdust in the air so a mask is necessary. I have a supply for a few months but I donated 60 of the N95 masks to my local hospital a few days ago. I guess I'll just wear mine in the shop for two weeks instead of one before replacing, and hopefully I'll have enough before they become available again (at least, at normal prices).

All protection basically looks "stupid", but it's job is to protect, not amass style points.

True, although I've seen some people wearing "designer" masks that look like something Batman would wear. And they don't look cheap but I work in a city where there's no shortage of wealth so if some rich person wants to wear a sleek mask to avoid looking "silly" more power to them. I've also seen people wearing scarves over their mouths. Not sure how much "protection" that offers but, hey, it makes people feel safe.

Both reasons still sound an alarm because either we're failing miserably to slow the spread or there are TONS of people roaming around NY and don't know they have the virus, thereby infecting many other people. Not good no matter how you look at it!
you could be one of those people spreading it unknowingly. until EVERYONE can get tested, they can be spreading unknowingly.

we're still a few weeks out from seeing if the stay at home is working (it should be) and youll start seeing cases drop from there. this was all projected to happen. STAGGERING numbers of cases start pouring in due to the heavy testing finally being done, then they will level off (hopefully)

The government stimulus check will cover my rent for May and then some. But will that money be taxed now or next year when we file again?
people literally cant get masks. what would you like them to do?

i would say 99% of people around where i am do not wear masks when they go out. whether they simply choose not to or cant get their hands on them is unknown but its irrelevant since there are no masks available.

Hard to believe that in such a capitalist country, there are no "entrepreneurs" out there chomping at the bit to produce and sell masks. There's probably more demand for masks now than there is for petroleum or iPhones.

Always have good hygiene, maybe miss a shower or two if I haven't done anything strenuous throughout the day. Having said that, I don't remember a time in my life where I have been so conscious of keeping my hands clean. This coronavirus doesn't bother me that much, but man has it made me pay attention to just how many different hands touch everyday things.

Well as I've said, I use the toilet 20-30 times a day so one of the upsides to that is I also wash my hands 20-30 times a day. Betting that's more than most people are washing their hands even now.

Draw some lips on it. Teeth. A team or band logo. It sucks that we have to endure the viral outbreak; taking proper steps to care for your health doesn't suck, and the mask doesn't have to be lame. Rock out with yer PPE out.

It's mostly peeing as I ingest a ridiculous amount of fluids daily due to being a runner. I do the other thing 1-3 times a day. Toilet paper is fine so far but there's a lot of people here so we'll see if that becomes an issue at some point.

Taiwan actually stepped in and took control of their face mask situation. Stopped exporting and buckled down to make sure their populace got them first. Then made them cheap and made them where you could order them online and you would get notifications on where they were ready to pick up.

Also I have a friend that sews and he has been making reusable facemask for people. Using spare cloth he has lying around.
