I hate nobody, I trust nobody except the health scientist experts.
That's all, thats my opinion, thats the balance I make, that's what makes sense to me; investing in health, cleanness, wealth last.

Business must go on but if people die doing business is it worth it?
Good business is take care of people, helping the poor, people who lost their jobs, the doctors and nurses who are working on the front lines. ...Not bailing out companies who are up to no good.

Anyway I think comes Easter on April 12 common sense will prevail and lose heads will get new bolts. I'm pretty sure of that, or that would be pure mass suicide...extreme selfish madness...Sparta.

He also said covid-19 was no big deal, but later had to declare it a national emergency and start lockdown measures. That showed that when worse comes to shove, even someone as anti-science as he is would still defer to the experts. The experts have been clear on this: we will need many months of strong mitigation, i.e. closures, quarantines, etc. until we have a widely available vaccine. When Trump sees new deaths still rising exponentially on Easter, maybe he will similarly change his tone.

Tell that to Italy. Tell that, sadly, to the US...numbers are numbers. You can make them fit whatever perspective you want.

Fine....let's say when all is said and done that the total death rate is 2%. So what. The death rate for those who end up hospitalized are way higher - right now the US is at 10%. So what does it matter to nitpick numbers.

So is that number less 'real' than the 'overall' number?

Why play semantics?

YOU CANNOT LOCK DOWN THE ENTIRE PLANET FOR THE 18 MONTHS IT WILL TAKE FOR THIS TO RUN IT'S COURSE.

I don't know how much clearer that can be.

I think it will be back to "business as usual" in most places by June but that will include some new restrictions that probably won't go away until after there's a vaccine.

Social distancing is one of those restrictions, especially since most people still can't follow that one.

and beyond that....what's to stop COVID-2026 from happening again when a) a Chinese person eats a bat or b) A botched SARS vaccine is accidentally released from a Lvl4 virology lab - pick your version of reality?

I think every country will be more prepared the next time this happens. That's actually why some places that had to deal with SARS already were more prepared than others that hadn't. Canada actually has a stockpile of 55 million N95 masks because of SARS for instance (they're checking to see if they're actually still good).

China didn't lock down the entire country. Just the sick province.

Countries that kept a lid on it are now seeing spikes as they let up restrictions - Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan etc.

Pondosinatra, dear sir, Coronavirus is different than anything we have seen for the last hundred years plus...since the Spanish Flu.
This is a pandemic we are living in right now, not a Wall Street New York Stock Exchange game.
A barrel of oil will get to $10 and $5.
Gold you cannot buy right now, and nobody knows the real value, or you can buy for around $2,100 US an ounce and wait weeks for delivery...includes shipping.
But on paper what's the price of gold today?

We need ventilators, it's worth more than gold, we need lots of masks, it's worth more than $2 trillion stimulus, we need medical protective gear and equipment, we need to help our parents, our doctors, our nurses, the vulnerable. ...The strong will survive.

I know it will be difficult, but life will find a way, because we will gain new knowledge. Maybe there could be some kind of staggered working hours and/or calendar, or see-sawing between opening and closures, etc. Or maybe some other better solutions. You are prognosing this based on today's knowledge and come up with a gloomy prediction. But we will GAIN new knowledge going forward. 100 years ago "experts" said as world population grew, food production would not keep up and we would have widespread famine. BUT THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN because nowadays we can produce food for many more people with much less resource and time (famine still exists because of poor distribution, not lack of food). But experts from 100 years ago didn't know that.

I believe back in January or so they (Canada) send medical supplies to China.
Now they are the one who's going to need it ... soon enough.

My rural home town of 500 people just got its first confirmed case, out of state worker who returned home and self quarantined.
