Have smaller stores been forced to close though? They haven't over here. All our local 'convenience' stores are still open. Unless of course they have closed due to staff illness.

I wasn't referring to the food stores. But they are a small minority, of the smaller businesses forced to shut down. The big stores are going to have a food section, and 70% of the space devoted to non-essential items which are still for sale. Huge advantage and unfair.

Yup, here in NY, all the small convenience stores in my neighborhood are closed. I guess they are not "essential" enough.

Hopefully this will soon be applied everywhere there is a shutdown (which should be most places by now). The intent is to reduce traffic in the stores by limiting to essential items, but it's also an issue of fairness with competitors who are not fortunate to have a sub section devoted to essential items. With these business closed, it just drives more people to the big box stores for the non-essential items.

check this video out... 45 minutes and part two is on the website.

conspiracy theorist says all of these things would happen and was by design over years and years. using a global pandemic as an excuse to implement tracking on people, empowering big businesses (amazon, walmart etc.) and using the shutdown as a means to change the entire global economic structure to benefit the 1% nation. some stuff in there is a little wacky but is on point with a lot of stuff, kind of scary seeing it actually play out.

That might work for a backwards state like Vermont, who BTW is the only state in the US not to have a McDonalds in their state capital. I don't see it working for other more metropolitan states especially those whose outer lying areas only have a Walmart or a Target.

Guess these must be the same geniuses who "planned" the Spanish flu and the Bubonic Plague.....

Speaking of price gouging, I just paid $12 for a pair of masks from a local bodega. I only purchased them because I plan on re-using them over several days as opposed to using them once and throwing them out. And I only use them while riding on public transportation, not to throw out the garbage or shop for groceries. The experts on TV are saying we don't even need them but they do offer a sliver of peace of mind and any peace of mind is better than no peace of mind

All of the Asian countries that have embraced masks for everyone seem to have done better during this pandemic than the rest. Just sayin'

Masks absolutely help, ignore the CDC/WHO in that regard. They're only saying that because there's a shortage. If we had a surplus, I guarantee you masks would be preached as much as washing hands, and social distancing.

To elaborate: anything that stands in the way of the droplets in the air from reaching the mucous membrane areas in your face (one of the main ways to get infected) is going to help, whether it's a mask, bandanna, transparent face shield; heck, it could even be a Mandalorian helmet for that matter.

I was looking forward to it next month. They rescheduled it for the end of August so we’ll see.

They're not shutting down the Walmarts and Costcos, only stopping the "in-store" sales of non-essential items. You can still buy non-essentials online or curbside pickup for stores that offer it. Why wouldn't that work elsewhere?
