If local grocery stores start shutting down, even temporarily for cleaning, due to employees dying, this will add a lot of additional chaos to the grocery shortage. Many people only have a couple grocery stores nearby, and if they are closed for days for cleaning, or because employees refuse to come to work, it's going to get desperate for some people. |

Some news today about Covid-19 in The Republic of Ireland.
There have been 42,484 tests carried out across the Irish health system since midnight last night. 12,271 (19%) of these tests carried out within the past week have come back positive for the virus. The numbers of the total testing for Coronavirus has been ramped up significantly in Ireland within the past week with 40% of tests carried out over the past seven days. Dr. Tony Holohan has said on RTÉ's Ireland on Call this evening that Irish people should not need to wear masks to flatten the curve on Coronavirus as the risk is still low. But he also said that the easing of restrictions from Coronavirus in Ireland would come in when the time is right. And that will not be happening on Easter Sunday. Professor Sam McConkey has said the current set of restrictions are beginning to see a fall in the numbers of community transmission of the virus. He said that they may last longer for another two weeks to see the amount of community transmissions of the virus in the country, if the government wants to introduce more ''hell for leather'' measures, drop even further as we go into the summer. |

This thing has given me panic attacks beyond my wildest dreams. I'll have to deal with that alone, but as far as the virus and the hysteria surrounding it, we are all in this together, and I feel good knowing that we will get through it together. I don't mean to sound corny or loopy, but I've found positivity is one of the few things keeping me healthy right now. That and my N95 and social distancing...
I'm finding this forum, at least the movie side of it, to be cathartic as well. It's good to talk movies and watch movies as the world stands still. I thought living through 9/11 was going to be the biggest event of my life. That's no longer the case. Regardless of how the media is handling things (I've stayed far away because of the obvious), let's stay home and watch movies and in a few weeks, or month or two, we'll be back to some sense of life. I cannot wait for the day.... when I can also walk inside a Best Buy again. |

I still want to know why of all goods in a store why everyone flocked to paper products? I mean bottled water and nonperishables/canned goods didn't start flying off the shelves til after everyone wiped out TP/paper towels.

And yet, those who bought a couple extra packs are glad they did now. The last time I bought any was over 2 weeks ago and that was two 6-packs. And that supply has been going down, and I have yet to see a roll in any stores I've been in since.
Again, most people only bought a couple weeks' worth. It's a few hoarders and Ebay sellers that bought dozens at a time that ruined it for the rest of us. There's nothing wrong with buying a 2-3 week supply when you're in the middle of an emergency. There is something wrong with filling your cart full of it to sell at 10x the price on Ebay. Remember they are now telling us not to go into grocery stores for the next two weeks, as this is the critical stage where the curve may be approaching peak. So it's not at all unreasonable that people were shopping for a couple weeks at a time. We had no idea from one day to the next how stock would hold up, or what the officials would be telling us. |

Again, those shortages were caused by Ebayers and hoarders. It wasn't the average person loading up their grocery carts with this stuff. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/coron...171734990.html "Supermarket shortages across the UK have not been driven by hoarders raiding shelves but by ordinary shoppers making more trips to the shops and buying slightly more than usual, according to market research." "The average spend per supermarket trip rose by 16% to £22.13 in the week ending 17 March, Kantar said. That same week, Brits made an extra 15m visits to the supermarket, compared to a month earlier. Kantar based its conclusions on the analysis of 100,000 people’s shopping habits in Britain. Fraser said the uptick in visits and spending could be driven by people having more meals at home." I mentioned this last week. That article (which was from a couple weeks ago) said supermarket research showed the average shopper spent an additional £22.13 - 16% more than average. Grocery stores just weren't prepared for every shopper buying/spending another 16% more goods. Grocery stores carefully balance their stock based on their previous trends and they know how much to order - when every shopper is suddenly home 24/7 and needs more supplies, grocery stores aren't equipped to handle the load. That doesn't mean people are hoarding. It means people are home more and need more supplies. |

So I decided to venture our today to go to my local Dollar Tree to pick up munchies which I am out of. Instead of buying for 5 days which allows me to get out of the house I shopped for 10 days instead.
No TP. No rice. No canned soups other than chicken noodle. No canned anything other than pork and beans (yuk). They did have paper towels though. The soda aisle was stocked as was the munchie and candy aisles. Store limit is 10 people. If I am frugal I can make the munchies last till the 20th when I have to go see my doctor. Traffic on Coors was pretty much the same as always. Target's parking lot was 1/4 full. DT is the only store open in the strip mall with Target on the other side of it. |
