Many of you should be lucky you don't live in Canada. At first glance it may seem like because our rates are much lower that it's safer in Canada. Well it is, except the federal government has taken fear mongering to such an absurd level recently. Every day they come up with some new bull**** statistic showing how the death rates will surge to absurd levels and we'll be stuck at home through the summer. It's utter nonsense to keep spewing out statistics based on no preventative measures being followed and treating all deaths as covid deaths when many of them are covid aided, but not the sole cause.

Provincial level wise, in Quebec for example they are cautiously optimistic that the peak will come soon and are evaluating scenarios to slowly start reopening in late may, early June. We have the most cases but they actually are way more transparent about cases and death tolls. The virus is a serious threat, but at the same time keeping people locked up through the summer and fall is not a viable solution and they recognize that. The vast majority of our deaths in Quebec are people over the age of 70 and two clusters of deaths caused by gross negligence at private assisted living homes.

I find it awfully absurd that pneumonia and regular flu deaths are miraculously way down this year when it's more likely that many covid deaths could vert well flu/pneumonia aided deaths, but they put covid as the death reason since they don't need to scientifically prove it, just put that it was possible due to similar symptoms.

Surely people have realised by now that they had to exaggerate figures so stupid people will actually take notice and do as they are told, otherwise the idiots will be out there continuing to catch and spread the virus.

You should be thankful they took it so seriously.

Time is the only thing that is going to end this thing and the sooner its under control and the initial wave has passed, the sooner the lockdown will end, it's as simple as that.

Everything else is meaningless chatter.

It would've been 10 x worse if they didn't do it when they did and 10 x better if they'd have done it 2 month earlier.

It'd have probably all been over by now.

Some people are having trouble finding product at supermarkets. Me? I'm having trouble finding one that's open regular hours. I ventured out to my neighborhood market yesterday at 12:37 in the afternoon with shopping cart in tow only to find it had recently closed. I mean, noon is a bit early, isn't it? I've also rushed back from work to try to make it to the market before they close (usually 7:30 PM) and bam! Shuttered before 7. Restaurants closing at 8. Laundromats closed by 3PM on weekends. Too bad no one has thought of an app for pickup and delivery laundry service. Coronavirus: please go away.

Do you guys even read what others say sometimes? I'm talking about right now (hence the second sentence having the word recently) that they've done like a 10X multiplier a month later after everyone is already in lock down based on no measure being taken. This wasn't in early march, just a few days ago. Trudeau has basically said that this will be the new normal until a vaccine is out next year which is fear mongering country destroying nonsense.

By what measure would things be over by now if they acted a month earlier if they're only showing bull**** figures now when the virus is nearing it's first wave peak?

Where can one find the numbers on flu, and pneumonia deaths?

Not sure what’s happening up in Canada, but for the U.S., all things considered, it’s more likely that COVID-19 deaths are actually being undercounted because of a lack of available coronavirus testing for coroners and medical examiners, conversely, postmortem detection for influenza has been easy for a long time - https://www.aaptuk.org/media/news/20...at-post-mortem

and I think pretty much available in most jurisdictions, e.g. http://www.dph.illinois.gov/sites/de...ion-041416.pdf

Here's a detailed article from RTÉ's Fergal Bowers about how the strain of Coronavirus is having an impact in Ireland.

https://www.rte.ie/news/coronavirus/...egins-to-show/

There is some important pieces of information here about wearing masks quoted from a report in the British Medical Journal.

Quote:
Masks have been a subject of some debate. There have been mixed views on whether the general public should wear masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Masks are certainly important for those who have the virus and health staff treating them.

A report in the British Medical Journal yesterday reviewed the known evidence.

It asked if policy makers should apply the ‘precautionary principle’ and encouraged people to wear face masks, on the grounds that we have little to lose and potentially something to gain from this measure.

The argument is made that we should sometimes act without definitive evidence, just in case.

Whether masks will reduce transmission of Covid-19 in the general public is contested.

The BMJ authors say that even limited protection could prevent some transmission of the virus and save lives.

So the British report concluded that "because Covid-19 is such a serious threat, wearing masks in public should be advised".
That bit of information in bold is what happening right now about regarding to masks to stop Covid-19 from being spread around to other people in Ireland. It is only mandatory for people in the country if you are being tested for the virus, if you have been exposed to the virus or if you are a healthcare worker.

If the Irish government get the official go-ahead from NPHET; it could look very likely that the government could implement this rule as an official advisory guideline from The Department of Health. But another thing to know about this crucial measure is that it's government does not have any more legislative powers to pass legislation to make it mandatory under law to wear masks across it's entire population unless a new government is formed in the next few weeks. Our current government is only a caretaker government for the moment because the incumbent party, Fíne Gáel, does not have a majority in it's parliament after the last general election was held in February.

Ya, not sure what my fellow Canuck is ranting and raving about....Quebec is the worst hit province. Maybe cause most people there have the same attitude as his.

The only reason we're not as bad as Italy or Spain or the UK is we had the advantage of time on our side. Yes, definitely could have reacted earlier. But the numbers (so far) are showing that all things considered we reacted soon enough.

I've just heard that Matt Damon is self-isolating in Ireland at the moment. He was meant to do some filming, for a movie directed by Ridley Scott called The Last Duel which also stars Adam Driver & Ben Affleck, in Wicklow. Some filming had taken place in France before it relocated to Ireland. Unfortunately; production of the film has currently been stopped because of the restrictions due the Coronavirus being in Ireland.

Matt Damon is currently laying low in Dalkey in South Dublin.

There a picture of him here on Reddit.

"All academic papers on Covid-19 will be subject to extra vetting by the Chinese government before being submitted for publication, according to a new policy. Studies on the origin of the virus will receive extra scrutiny and must be approved by central government officials."

I'm guessing papers suggesting the virus was an accidental release from the only Lvl 4 virology lab in Wuhan won't be approved...

There hasn't been an academic paper suggesting that, I kind of doubt any reputable medical journal would ever say that unless they had incontrovertible proof.

Although one of the funnier conspiracy theories I saw lately suggested that Bill Gates has a vaccine propaganda to create a world order with only vaccinated people, in which he controls the platform.
