I think people should fly airlines at their own risk, but depending on where they're coming back from, should be quarantined for at least 5 days, and possibly tested after that.

Social distancing, which is a term you're going to hear a lot more of soon, is what I'm trying to get at here. It's impossible to reduce all risks, as you could just get it by chance. But the more social distancing behavior that takes place, the slower the spread of the virus, and the more lives will be saved. This is what we need to do now before it's too late. People may think its ridiculous, and maybe it does sound extreme, but the alternative is dire.

Movie theatres seem to be dead on their own anyway. Checked the 4/5pm showings for AMC Eden Prairie (a Minneapolis suburb) and all movies have 5 people or less, half of the movies have none at all. An IMAX showing of Onward started with no tickets sold.

My former University will no longer have on campus classes until further notice. Students and faculty will have to do everything remotely. No St. Patrick’s Day Parade in NYC now....it is really starting to get crazy now.

All the closings, the cancellation of events, and everything is a good thing in my opinion. The less people are out and together, the less chance of it spreading uncontrolled. Reducing the amount of people that get infected is paramount right now. You obviously can't stop it all, and have to rely on people to take proper precautions (and I have no faith in people), but if we can stop the exponential growth of the virus here that would be huge. If the amount of people that get it start doubling every week or so then that's very bad.

Numbers will also potentially spike soon too because more tests are being done, so in the short term this may not necessarily mean the virus is just spreading like wildfire, but it's also concerning to know that each of those people that got it, possibly spread it to at least 2 other people. And many many more people if that person is in a movie theater, concert, sporting event, etc..Hence the need to cancel those types of events.

My fear is that on top of the virus itself the US will also leave people in such financial distress (through lost work, companies downzising/going bankrupt, parents having to miss work to watch kids when their schools close, etc.) that the public health could eventually be harmed more by the financial hardships of this outbreak, though that would be difficult to track and quantify.

The scary thing is that one person infecting 2 more assumes people are freaking out and not taking risks. I expect the us is going to be closer to 5 or 10 infections per sick person since so many will go to work anyway not wash hands etc while sick.

There's still flights to and from the countries with the most coronavirus cases.

They should've grounded more flights.

Unless you're going back to your home country literally no reason to fly at all.

Millennials are taking advantage of cheap flights. Sadly, there's none departing from my hick area.

Excerpt from: When a danger is growing exponentially, everything looks fine until it doesn’t

So everyone needs to understand a few things.

First, the virus is here, and it is spreading quickly, even though everything looks normal. Right now, the United States has more reported cases than Italy had in late February. What matters isn’t what you can see but what you can’t: the patients who will need ICU care in two to six weeks.

Second, this is not “a bad flu.” It kills more of its hosts, and it will spread farther unless we take aggressive steps to slow it down, because no one is yet immune to this disease. It will be quite some time before the virus runs out of new patients.

Third, we can fight it. Despite early exposure, Singapore and Hong Kong have kept their caseloads low, not by completely shutting down large swaths of their economies as China did but through aggressive personal hygiene and “social distancing.” South Korea seems to be getting its initial outbreak under control using similar measures. If we do the same, we can not only keep our hospitals from overloading but also buy researchers time to develop vaccines and therapies.

Fourth, and most important: We are all in this together. It is your responsibility to keep America safe by following the CDC guidelines, just as much as it is House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s or President Trump’s responsibility to lead us to safety. And until this virus is beaten, we all need to act like it.

Meh, we'll all be infected within six months. In the meanwhile, this is the new five/handshake:

I was pretty much 100% certain I would be going to go see Quiet Place 2 in theater unless there was news of a case in my city by then.

But now I'm thinking I won't go, since it takes 2 weeks for a person to even get the symptoms there's no telling... I've always been good about staying clean, washing hands etc. And I'm under 40 so I'm not too concerned about what happens to myself if I get it.

But my mom had surgery like a month ago and she's 70, so I've been helping her out and last thing I'd want is to risk giving it to her if it did come to me.

I really hope things get better and stabilized very soon. What a mess this all is..

I just saw a scroll on the bottom of the TV News saying that Tom Hanks has been diagnosed with the coronavirus and he's being treated on the Gold Coast in Australia where he was set to film a movie on the life of Elvis Presley.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/11/b...ronavirus.html

Edit. I just noticed another member had already posted this news. My apologies.

I work in a school district in California where the virus has the most cases in the state. I've heard "kids are low risk" about 100 times in the last three days. Doesn't mean they can't be carriers and spread the virus. The LAST thing they want to do is close schools down due to all the funding we would lose. The number one priority right now is money, and not the safety of everyone.
