All buildings have a occupancy limit and they may use that number to help re-open business with social distancing. For instance only 20% max occupancy at a time.

What's worse...thousands of deaths right now, or millions of people left bankrupt and on welfare because they can't open their businesses? And if everyone simply THINKS and takes necessary precautions when going out, those "thousands" of deaths can be easily preventable. I'd be more than willing to wear gloves and a mask when going out to the movies or a bookstore or Best Buy (or simply a walk) for the next several months.

That's the unofrtunate part. Anybody that is buying non-essentials due to their situation allowing is just going to give it to Amazon most likely. I would like to see it spent at some of the smaller places as they will need it. Spend it at some restaurants, theatres, small shops, whatever, after this is over. Instead it will be spent at Amazon since they're practically the only ones open for business.

Yup, life has to continue at some point, regardless of the virus. Can't just close everything and hope the problem goes away.

Tourism is going to be utterly devastated regardless. Some of the tourist towns may end up looking like ghost towns by the time a vaccine comes out. So many supporting small businesses depend on the seasonal crowds which aren't going to show up.

Same for sports and entertainment. I can only imagine the huge constraints on trying to get a movie made.

I'm going to sound like a smartass, but I'm actually being genuine; it's far too great an expectation to assume the general public will employ common sense with regards to hygiene and social distancing.

There's not a single person here who is outright against the eventual reopening of the economy. The concerns are that we either do it too soon or without enough restrictions.

Yeah you can't expect idiots to grow a brain, regardless of how long we wait. People are going to continue to do whatever they want regardless of the well-being of others.

I think most of us here have a good grasp of how the flu shot works. It always works for the strains it's prepared for. 100%? No, but it offers a good level of protection against the intended strains.

But it's a guessing game of knowing in advance which strains will be active for the upcoming season. So sometimes their forecasts are correct and their vaccines are prepared for the correct strains, and sometimes they're off and their vaccine protects against strains that don't end up being a threat that season. Either way it's always safe and always protects against the strains it was designed for.

But those strains aren't always the ones that end up being spread that season.

The last thing we need in here is for people to start claiming the flu shot is dangerous or ineffective.

I heard that the flu shot is only about 50% effective (if it were 80% or higher, then most everyone would get it). Certainly better than nothing, But obviously a coronavirus vaccine will have to be a lot higher than that, and hopefully not have to get in every year.

That's going to be the new normal, not shuttered businesses for months on end.
I don't expect anything major to happen here in NYC for another month, at least. I, personally, don't expect to be back to work before August.

People here are terrified. No one wants to go back to work and be the guinea pigs.

You can open whatever you want. You can say that certain restaurants and bars will be open with certain restrictions. Regardless, there will be a great deal of the population who won't go out even if those restrictions are in place.

As long as sick people isolate themselves as they're undergoing treatment, and uninfected people use masks and gloves and don't cough on anything, it should be safe to start opening up businesses again by the end of the month. No country can exist with the entire populace cooped up inside for months and months on end. It's not healthy from a financial or mental perspective. It's gonna be May in barely two weeks, and I sure as shit don't want to be sitting on my couch when it's sunny and 75 degrees outside.

That depends again on which year it is. If their predictions are accurate and the 3-4 strains they include in the vaccination end up being the ones that are most prevalent that season, then it will be a very effective vaccine that year. If they get it wrong that year, and the strains that are spreading are not the ones they expected, then the vaccine will not be particularly beneficial. It will not be harmful, and it will still offer protection if you do get exposed to one of those strains. It's just that you won't be protected against the most likely strains.

Remember we don't worry about things like polio because vaccines work.

Many don't get it because many believe the anti-vaccination nuts on Youtube and Facebook.

We all get shots when we're young. It's why we don't have the things that previous generations did - because we vaccinate for it as part of standard procedure when we're young, and we even get booster shots.

People get Hepatitis shots when traveling to some countries. It would be foolish not to.

In my opinion, at least these kinds of closures drive home the point of how serious this is.

We all have heard the stories from early 2020 where it was all just the flu. Nothing to worry about.

If that mentality kept going like that and we didn't enforce restrictions, the deaths could have been a lot worst than thousands. Where eventually, the government had to step in and enforce restrictions anyways.

There was always going to be a tipping point where the amount of deaths would tip the scales. No government wants to be seen as the one who placed the economy over human lives.

The biggest factor on why certain regions didn't close is because of culture. American culture is very self absorbed. It is the me culture. You would have never convinced enough people to wear masks and gloves unless you force it.

Compare this to Korea/Japan where the culture is very much about the country as a whole and willing to do anything to protect it. Also doesn't hurt they wear masks when they fall ill and this has become the cultural normal.

Make it THE LAW. Throw very stiff fines that those who don't abide by proper hygiene and social distancing rules, and people will get into line right quick. We NEED to get things rolling again.

Tanking the economy will take/ruin many more lives in the long run than the disease will in the immediate future.

But people don't do that. Are you seeing some of the images being posted in here? It's scary. Many people are simply not isolating, sick or not.

The next wave of money could begin as early as the week of April 20 for a group of people who receive Social Security benefits via direct deposit but may not make enough money to be required to file a federal income tax return in 2018 or 2019. You will not need to file any extra forms to receive this money.

"The estimates are that nearly 99% of Social Security beneficiaries who do not file a return receive their benefits through direct deposit," according to Dingell's alert
