I'm getting very tired of seeing experts making opposing claims that leave us all in confusion.

I'm in one of the several states than have now made wearing masks a requirement if going out at all. And since I wear glasses, that makes it a nightmare for me. Yet I read stories like this today on Huffington Post:

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/do-fa...b6ce51a4ec0a09

"It isn’t an essential need for everyone to wear face masks, according to the CDC. Many experts stress that the main point of them is to keep someone who is already sick from infecting others.

We generally do not recommend the use of either masks or respirators for the general public. Of course, persons who desire to be extra cautious about their exposure to germs when in public may choose to wear a mask,” Martinello said."

And none of us can buy even surgical faxce masks, so the ones we're wearing are either homemade, which are rather ineffective, or ones we can buy form many online shops, qhich are also basically homemade - not surgical quality.

So the CDC continues to say it's not necessary and they don't recommend it, yet several states are requiring it to step outside and go anywhere, even though homemade masks are nowhere near as effective as surgical masks.

So what's the point? To put on a show to make it look like they're doing something by forcing us to wear them?

Meanwhile, a few links down on Yahoo:

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/clea...172700272.html

"Out of an abundance of caution, the CDC now recommends wearing a face mask or covering any time you go to grocery stores, pharmacies, or other places where social distancing is hard to practice."

This whole thing feels like some sick and twisted experiment. None of these experts can agree, even in their own agencies. They continue to contradict themselves and each other. No wonder nobody has any trust in anything they are saying. Who exactly are we supposed to believe again? And which day are we supposed to believe them? Yesterday, today or tomorrow?

"All face coverings — DIY or otherwise — should meet the following requirements, as outlined by the CDC:

Fits snugly but comfortably against the side of the face

Be secured with ties or ear loops

Includes multiple layers of fabric

Allows for breathing without restriction

Can be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape"

Mine is only single-layered. My girlfriend's dad made masks for us all trying to be nice, but they are only single-layered, and honestly probably doesn't do much at all. Except fog my glasses. They do that well. It's also kinda loose. It keeps slipping down the bridge of my nose.

This is my point. Why make it mandatory when A) everyone is wearing them wrong anyways (under their nose, hanging around their neck when not being worn, etc.), or B) most people aren't making them right anyways, whatever right means today.

WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME BOAT ...

"I heard that we are all in the same boat, but it's not like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa.

For some, quarantine is optimal. A moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in flip flops, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this is a desperate financial & family crisis.

For some that live alone they're facing endless loneliness. While for others it is peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters.

With the $600 weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales.

Some families of 4 just received $3400 from the stimulus while other families of 4 saw $0.

Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend.

Some want to go back to work because they don't qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break the quarantine.

Some are home spending 2-3 hours/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday.

Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others don't believe this is a big deal.

Some have faith in God and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come.

So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different.

Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing.

We are all on different ships during this storm experiencing a very different journey."

Most Movie Theaters in Georgia Won’t Reopen Next Week Despite Governor’s Plans

Quote:
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp will allow movie theaters to reopen starting April 27, but exhibition insiders stress that it would be nearly impossible for most major chains to start business back up by next week.

Movie theater circuits believe that it reopening won’t just be like flicking a switch. AMC Theaters, Regal Cinemas, Cinemark and other chains have furloughed or laid off almost all employees, and locations across the U.S. have been entirely shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. It would take longer than a week, insiders say, to re-hire staff and then train them in proper safety procedures.

Kemp’s announcement, which is in line with President Donald Trump’s first phase in the process of reopening the country, will require companies to observe strict social distancing measures and implement enhance sanitation. Workers will also have to be screened for illness, the governor said.

But even if employees were able to return to work swiftly and without the virus, there’s also a question of liability. Theater owners are still exploring legal issues they could face, should audiences get infected with COVID-19 from going to their movie theater. It’s uncertain whether the burden would fall on the exhibitor or the state.

Yes, I'm aware it's not just about me. Just like I know it's not all about YOU. Unfortunately, people will die no matter what is done and the steps taken. However, I'm looking at the broader picture and what would be the least devastating option long-term. I'm not taking a myopic view and simply looking at whether people will die from the coronavirus. It's not as simple as, OMG somebody is going to die from the corona thus we must lock everyone up.

If people are concerned about getting sick then by all means stay home, but if people want to continue working them let them take that risk.

Must be middle ground, especially in areas with less dense populations and activities with less person-to-person contact.

If I was a doctor and the government basically throws its hands up and says do what you want I would take a sabbatical. I would do my best for the first wave since not much could have been done and its my job but if they purposefully cause a second wave I would not risk myself for that stupidity as that was not what I signed up for.

Some might recall in past conversation with Geoff, that the last time we referenced someone (then) on the staff at Emory, it had to do with the motion picture Lone Survivor

I think there can be (& should be) a middle ground, problem is both sides only see one way or the other. I think opening things slowly with restrictions is a fair compromise, but some just want things open with the way they were before & at this moment I think that's obviously impossible.

The positive side of the lockdown for me personally is I get to spend a lot more time with my now 5 month old son.

Our governor will be making a decision by the end of this week on whether the state shut-down will continue into the month of May.

I’m just dreading having to go back to my 40-hour, 5 days a week, work schedule again. I was so much enjoying all of this time off and working around 4 hours a week.

Here in Canada, all I've heard about is a gradual opening of the provinces and loosening of the restrictions. Apparently talks are underway in Ontario on how to do it safely.

In Quebec the full picture ain't pretty (Dorval, maison Herron).
In BC people are coming back from Alberta (oil industry workers) just to make life nicer.
In Canada we can't afford shutting down the oil industry.

Wait another month ... Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, Vancouver, ... New York City.

This just makes me so mad with some people that are given authority.

We tried to have our elections in WI switched to mail vote, but it was ruled it has to be in public. My county went from 200+ to 1k and we're already in the top three highest cases for the state. Hell it's getting so bad they had to close down three meat plants for re-sanitation.

Decisions should not involve putting health and lives at risk. Someone really should document and write a book on how the entire system mishandled the whole thing.
