The purpose of masks is to protect someone else from getting it from you, not from you getting it. This reduces the spread.
They are effective, only if everyone follows the concept and wears a cloth mask.
The virus can be spread asymptomatically, and one vector of spread is aerosol particles (which means fans can blow the virus in the wrong direction and into people's faces)
Just think common sense and avoid where possible.
Certain modern day conveniences seem to make it easier for the virus to spread, and maybe simple common sense avoidance is the simple way to minimise the risk of catching the virus.

Known as an essential worker for weeks since the Covid-19 outbreak started, now she's unemployed. My wife got her official furlough notice, she's a RN at a big hospital in upstate NY. Guess the hospital is losing money on only treating covid-19 patients over the last month. Oh well, she'll probably make more sitting at home on unemployment than if she was on the front line anyway.

My father is funny.

When golf courses reopen: "Cuomo is smart"

This is false. You're implying that if a few people don't wear it then why bother, because they're not providing any level of effectiveness any more.

Georgia says hold my beer. Their cases are still going up and they're opening everything by Monday!!!

And when it backfires on them, I hope every person that gets sick sues the crap out of that Gov.

Again, false. Bars and nightclubs are among several types of businesses that will remain closed. And those that are opening will have distancing measures and other restrictions

Trust me, I'm not in favor of Georgia's overall handling of this crisis. There are just a lot of misleading headlines out there, and I think it's important not to spread misinformation.

Hopefully NYC follows soon after the May 15th date. Looking forward to going into stores not named Target or the Supermarket. Obviously they should keep masks mandatory while shopping in stores & stuff. I think things can reopen while still keeping people safe.

Grandma's was already canceled on me, signed up for Ruidoso as a replacement race. Hope it happens, expect restrictions to be a bit lighter by mid-June. Also currently registered for the September Sandia Crest Marathon, that one I definitely expect to run.

And the surgical mask still blocked 81% of the micron particles, vs 95% for the N95 masks. That difference was not enough to show up in the results. Just because a few more micron particles get through, it's probably not enough to launch an infection. I'm sure if the sample size was larger than the N95 would have been shown to be more effective in the end.

For the general public, aerosol infection isn't a big concern, especially outside where the air dilutes it immediately. Even inside the risk is low unless the place is full of people and the air is not circulating well. For example singing in a church releases a lot of vapor and that's why it should be curtailed when churches open back up. A lot of cases blew up from church going, and I think it was the singing that spread it more than anything.

But generally any face covering will provide good protection from large droplets and according to the scientific test done by that site you quoted, even a handkerchief blocked 28% of microns. So even with aerosols, it's better than nothing. And I don't think that site is trying to promote face coverings.
Honestly I tend to trust a site that isn't trying to sell me face masks more than a site that is trying to sell me face masks, as they may of course skew the results to help sell more masks if it's a site that sells masks.

But basically I figured that due to how people wear the masks (N95 masks have to be worn properly too), that contributes to how the N95 masks and surgical masks performed roughly the same in typical usage, even though N95 masks do indeed filter better. As you said, they both block larger particles, which may be how the majority of infections are happening, as opposed to aerosol. N95 certainly does a better job blocking aerosol.

Though the way I've seen some wear masks in Wal-Mart, it's no worse.

Also, if that's not the latest version of Norton, it's useless against COVID-19.

I’m starting to think the cdc had the right idea saying masks don’t help. It’s totally wrong but they are right in that a ton of people will wear terrible home made masks that don’t work and think that’s all they need. the home made masks are not a magic bullet that will stop you from getting corona virus they probably reduce your odds but it’s still like playing Russian roulette.

The ripple effect has effected some of the best hospitals in the country, e.g. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/emergen...ic-2020-04-20/
