So close down non-essential business too? How's that going to work? Even if they were allowed to stay open, people will be locked down so they may as well close anyway.

The economy relies on momentum and this would be the exact opposite. No non-essential business would survive being open less than half the time. Scientists are not economists and no way this would fly.

It's going to be as proposed by many governors. Open the economy in stages, but be ready to pull back if cases spike.

Obviously not based on the videos and links being shared in here.

Businesses are reopening, so is it asking too much to simply apply the "common knowledge" that everyone supposedly has acquired? If everyone is aware of this "common knowledge," it's easy to see that many are certainly ignoring it.

Getting very tired of the constant shaming taking place here, it is annoying and childish and the mods should be canning every post that does it, would cut this post size in half at this point. This thread imo is now a pointless mess of constant back and fourth of I'm right, your wrong!
You're absolutely right. This man is clearly a great citizen and should be commended for his behavior.

The most recent day I could find statistics for is May 18th, and cases were down by 5,000 from April 18th. But the total number was still 24,481. So no that’s not decreasing by a third or even close to it.

I’d like to see some actual proof with factual numbers to back up your baseless claims. Or you could just keep touting made up stuff that only you believe.

The main reason it's down over that time is because NY is down..

It breaks my heart the way homeless people are treated, to be honest. People move away because they smell and they kicked out for sleeping in a public area like a subway car because they have no place to live. The emotional meltdown those people must be going through is hard to fathom.

CNN is reporting that as of Tuesday, at least 17 states have recorded a clear upward trend of average new daily cases, which is a rise of at least 10% over the past seven days, according to an analysis based on data from Johns Hopkins University. Only 16 states' average new daily cases dropped more than 10%. Obviously, more testing is going to result in more cases.

Well NYC beaches are closed. Not sure why though. I've been to Rockaway Beach a few times and it's a pretty, peaceful beach and not many people really go there and should be very easy to maintain social distance there. Most people go to Coney Island.

You do understand that a lot more people go to the beach on a holiday like Memorial Day than some random times you may have gone right? This is Rockaway Beach on Memorial Day in 2011...

So peaceful!

One thing the Pandemic has taught us is that scientists tend to get muzzled in this country.

https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases
I'm looking at these John Hopkins charts for US data, and if you compare a high to a low around the same time last month, you could maybe get it to one third? But that low is just going to jump up again ~5,000 (and then take another dive).

So if you compare a high point in April to a high point around the same time in May (or a low to a low on month apart), it looks like the decline is more like 20-25% at the most generous.

I'm open to the idea that I'm not great at reading charts. But getting to a "one third decline," at least by this data, feels like cheating.

This has nothing to do with what I posted (and mar30 "liked" your post, which was rather odd, because I would think he knew what I was talking about, since I replied with my opinion to his link).

But I agree though that everyone should be aware of "common knowledge" (which I assume to be those handy little "facts" you posted earlier?) and adhere it. It is possible to reopen the economy and social distance at the same time. The only question is how much and which areas can reopen to a greater extent.
