Which is why there won't be international vacationing for several years - not unless you have a metric shit tonne of vacation time - 1 month of which would be spent in quarantine.

Seriously ill Covid-19 patients who were treated with hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine were more likely to die or develop dangerous heart arrhythmias, according to a large observational study published Friday in the medical journal The Lancet.

Researchers analyzed data from more than 96,000 patients with confirmed Covid-19 from 671 hospitals. All were hospitalized from late December to mid-April, and had died or been discharged by April 21.

Just below 15,000 patients were treated with the antimalarial drugs hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, or one of those drugs combined with an antibiotic.

All four of those treatments were linked with a higher risk of dying in the hospital. About 1 in 11 patients in the control group died in the hospital. About 1 in 6 patients treated with chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine alone died in the hospital. About 1 in 5 treated with chloroquine and an antibiotic died and almost 1 in 4 treated with hydroxychloroquine and an antibiotic died.

Researchers also found that serious cardiac arrhythmias were more common among patients receiving any of the four treatments. The largest increase was among the group treated with hydroxychloroquine and an antibiotic; 8% of those patients developed a heart arrhythmia, compared with 0.3% of patients in the control group.

Ontario had highest numbers in 2 weeks....and no Underworld it's NOT because of more testing. Ontario has the lowest testing numbers in the nation.

Good thing they're opening everything back up.

Terrible research.

You can't go back after the fact, look at cases, and decide HCQ is the reason why more people are dying, because they only give HCQ to patients who are in worse condition.

If the people given HCQ were 50% likely to die but only 20% did, and the people who didn't get it were 10% likely to die and 10% did, more HCQ deaths doesn't mean it doesn't work, it means that sicker people are more likely to die. Effectively there is no "control group", and they are using extremely shoddy research methodology to claim that there is.

This is the 3rd study I've seen pull the exact same stunt.

*EDIT* I take that back, the actual paper says there should be no correlation drawn between deaths and HCQ. So I take back what I said about poor research. I'll change it to poor reporting, because CNN didn't include that bit in their article.

Some rumor is going around tonight that Ireland's Chief Medical Officer will be having meetings next week to reduce physical distancing down to 1m soon based on official Irish health advice. The European CDC is also reviewing social distancing to be reduced to 1m going from WHO guidelines.

Coronavirus Live Updates: Hydroxychloroquine Linked To Higher Risk Of Death, Study Finds

Quote:
“We did not observe any benefit of hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine (when used alone or in combination with a macrolide) on in-hospital outcomes, when initiated early after diagnosis of COVID-19,” the researchers concluded. “Each of the drug regimens of chloroquine or hydroxychloroquine alone or in combination with a macrolide was associated with an increased hazard for clinically significant occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias and increased risk of in-hospital death with COVID-19.”

I explained what happened to me previously, but basically the Turbotax online system would not let me submit the file electronically due to certain lines being zero, so it said I had to print it and mail it in. I qualify as a non-filer, but filed anyways this year hoping to be in the system for the stimulus check. Instead, I got screwed by having to mail it in, when I could have waited and submitted the "non-filer" form they put up. But that didn't exist yet when I tried to file at Turbotax.

Here's a key statement in the final summary:

These findings suggest that these drug regimens should not be used outside of clinical trials and urgent confirmation from randomised clinical trials is needed."

Another random story from NYC:

Just got off a zoom call with a good friend/co-worker. She's been quarantined, like the rest of us, with her husband in the city. She went to get the antibody test and it came back positive. She was sick in the middle of March and thought that might have been it. However, her husbands test came back negative.

There's no way in Hell that two people who live alone in a small NYC apartment could not give it to each other.

We're learning more and more now there's a lot of people that simply can't infect others for whatever reason. So barring a false-negative for that husband, it is possible your friend is just one of the many people out there that doesn't transmit the virus. I'd say it's probably more of a spectrum from people who barely release any infectious particles at all, to those that are superspreaders. It's the superspreaders that really contribute most to the volume of cases we're seeing.

Here's a really good article about that: What makes a Covid-19 patient a 'superspreader'?

And the relevant part to what I mentioned above:

Quote:
But Jamie Lloyd-Smith, who has studied the spread of pathogens at the University of California-Los Angeles, said the vast majority of infected individuals don't spread the virus at all. "The consistent pattern is that the most common number is zero," he said. "Most people do not transmit."

Or...she's a false positive.

That's the larger issue that we all keep bringing up: nothing makes any sense.

Yeah, I was going to mention that she could be false positive too, but figured that if she did come down with something in March that she suspected was the virus, then perhaps it's accurate in her case. Who knows though.

There is a lot more confusion now with the variety of antibody tests out there. Many people that got positive (or negative) results came from tests that were later shown to not be accurate enough. Then there's the amount of antibodies a person actually develops if they tested positive for the virus. Some don't develop as much others.

As an update, he worked last Thursday, the 14th of May.
He found out he had it on either Thursday or Friday.
The Hospital where they work is saying that he didn't have it.
He worked with my landlord on her Ward.
I hope he didn't infect everyone.
I don't know if my heart could, literally, take it.
One chamber doesn't beat as often as the other three.
So, it's been a week so far, I have one to go before symptoms start, roughly.

Don't spin.

The mind can screw with your immune system as well.
It's also allergy season and it could *VERY* easily be that as well.

Do everything you can not to spin out of control. Get as much sleep as you can. Take some Vitamin C (and D, if you have it).

My 90 year old grandmother and mom went to the doctor 2 days before he called out with symptoms. And, as you would expect, he was right up next to my grandmother while he was checking her out.

They're both fine and you will be as well.

Well, we are about to hit the 100,000 mark with deaths in the US. With people refusing to do what they are told, I can only imagine how much higher the death toll will be in a few more months.

I guess the positive that will come out of this is some sort of population control.
