My company announced their reopening plans for June and got approval from the state.

I am now waiting on the return to work email. It’s a wonky process. I know other employees who have gotten their email, full time/part time, newly hired or seniority team members. It’s a random selection and will be done in waves.

My work opens to the public tomorrow with no plans of limiting customers or requiring them to wear masks. They said it was “more dangerous to have an employee at the door making sure everyone was wearing masks” than it was to just let them in without a mask. What they meant was “we don’t want to be sued if someone says they have a medical condition and we don’t let them in”.

My company has hired a security firm to temp check us before we are allowed to enter the building.

I take occasional "breaks" and partially remove my mask to inhale fresh air; many people do too but they're doing it wrong. The safest way to temporarily unmask is to grab one of the loops and "unhook" it from your ear and let the mask hang from the other ear. People usually grab their masks from the top and pull down and let it sit below their lower lip. Bad idea. Whatever is on the face of that mask has a better chance of entering your mouth as you talk or inhale than if it just hangs. Speaking of masks, a co-worker was selling homemade masks and I grabbed a couple. They're more comfortable and I can breathe a little easier but they cover half my head. I look like Hannibal Lecter on that vertical stretcher

so coronavirus went away?

barely any mention of it on the news in light of new situations unfolding across the country. it now seems these two go hand in hand. will we see a spike in all these regions? if not, does that mean things can start opening up quicker?

i mean, just look at the crowds congregating. might as well open up concerts and sporting events

i assume this goes under the "social" events? but i literally dont want to even talk about that and hope im not overstepping the rules here...im simply talking about large crowds congregating.

US reports over 21,000 new cases amid mass protests

Quote:
More than 21,000 people were diagnosed with COVID-19 across the United States on Monday, according to a count kept by Johns Hopkins University.

The new cases were identified in all 50 states as well as Washington, D.C. and U.S. territories.

By May 20, all states had begun lifting stay-at-home orders and other restrictions put in place to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The slight uptick in infections also come as mass protests take place from coast to coast in the wake of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died on May 25 in Minneapolis shortly after a white police officer was filmed kneeling on his neck for nearly nine minutes as three other officers stood by.

The Minneapolis Police Department has since fired all four officers, and the one seen pinning Floyd down, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter. However, protesters are calling for the three other officers to be charged and are decrying the overall treatment of black Americans by police.

From May 25 through May 27, the United States reported a daily average of around 18,600 new cases of COVID-19. That number has increased to a daily average of around 22,500 new cases from May 28 through June 1, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The number of people who have taken to the streets in the days since Floyd's death has been in the thousands, although many have been seen wearing face masks.

dont we have to wait at least a week before knowing if its from the protest gatherings since symptoms may not show for up to 2 weeks?

tracking this and making clear assumptions on everything is very difficult especially when its an overall number for 50 states vs just those having the gatherings...

surprised its not being reported on the major networks

Or don't want any employees getting hurt or killed confronting someone without a mask?

It was only reporting that since majority states began to reopen, there was an uptick in reported cases.

Add onto the protests happening across the country this week, it is likely to contribute to more cases.

So if those who were infected before mass gathering in protest may be asymptomatic and spread it to hundreds or thousands more. So on and so forth.

oh absolutely, im just curious as to how much. this is either going to turn into a disaster real quick on the covid front or it will be eye opening that numbers dont spike anywhere near what they initially thought.

What a completely ridiculous fear-mongering attempt. People do realize cases have been over 21K pretty much every single day for the last 2 months right?

It’s a reach, but again they weren’t correlating the two. Simply stating “amid protests.” Not “because of protests.”

But yeah...gotta get those clicks somehow.

It's called headline framing and is something a large majority of news networks and print media do today. They realize how lazy Americans are today and know they most likely wont read past the first paragraph if even the headline in many cases.

Or those clickbait articles with “Where are they know?” celebrity headlines that feature an image of a well-known celebrity but you have to click through 50 million other celebrity photos until you get to the one that made you hit the link

And what specific numbers did "‘they'? initially thought”?

Regardless, the significant issue is, which nobody knows for certain, is how much of an increase in hospital admissions will there be due to the lack of social distancing from the recent social unrest. This will take about 3-4 weeks from the day of the initial gatherings to pan out…..and from there, the critical consequence being whether one’s local hospital(s) will be overwhelmed with sick patients.

Right now, due to COVID-19 and the fact that hospitals have begun to do elective surgeries again (and I’m not talking face lifts or tummy tucks, but important surgeries that should not be further postponed) the ICUs in more than one hospital in the SoCal community for instance, are already at, or near capacity. It’s already a fragile balance at those facilities and I would assume this situation is not unique to other community hospitals in other parts of the country either.

as far as the numbers go, just a general spike based on what we have been seeing prior to looser regulations. old numbers vs new... which should be fairly evident in the areas protests/gatherings are taking place. guess we'll see in a few weeks.

Keep in mind that cases would be falling faster if the testing capacity were at April levels. Now basically anybody can get a test, even if no symptoms, so the cases are including a lot more asymptomatic people than before.

Deaths are a more accurate metric now for trends over time, and they are down quite a bit, and not just in New York.

Deaths are a questionable metric when states like Florida, and Georgia among others appear to be covering up their deaths and/or not filing them as COVID deaths.
