Marin county now has the highest infection rate in the Bay Area. This is due to cases being concentrated in the Canal area, which is primarily apartments where mostly Latinos live and multiple households sharing the same unit are common.

This area has had 92% of new cases the last four weeks, but only consist of 4.4% of the population in Marin. These people cannot social distance in their own homes, and that's where the outbreaks are occurring everywhere. Inside the home, and mostly inside homes like these. The poor are taking the brunt of this virus, and they are the ones most likely to be on the front lines in low paying jobs like grocery stores, cleaning, transit and other services.

Yes. I'm constantly interacting with the public; signing for packages, handling ail, etc. I guess I can use gloves but wearing them for 8 hours is just as bad as wearing a mask that long.

Quote:
Patience in lifting coronavirus restrictions is paying off all over the world, but lifting lockdowns too early can have deadly consequences.

An analysis of policies across 18 nations has shown that most of the countries that have now been designated by the European Union as having the epidemic under control only started easing their regulations after seeing sustained drops in daily new cases of Covid-19.

Why Covid-19 restrictions should be eased gradually ...

In contrast, three of the four countries with the world's highest death tolls and case counts -- the United States, Brazil and India -- have either never properly shut down or started reopening before their case counts begun to drop.
The EU formally agreed a set of recommendations of 15 countries it considers safe enough to allow their residents to travel into its territory on Tuesday. To get on the list, countries have to check a number of boxes: their new cases per 100,000 citizens over the previous 14 days must be similar to or below that of the EU, and they must have a stable or decreasing trend of new cases over this period in comparison to the previous 14 days.
The bloc will also consider what measures countries are taking, such as contact tracing, and how reliable each nation's data is.
The list includes Algeria, Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Montenegro, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, Serbia, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, Uruguay. China, where the virus originated, is also on the list, but the EU will only offer China entry on the condition of reciprocal arrangements.
An examination of the coronavirus response in the 14 countries shows they have one key thing in common. Despite economic pressure, the vast majority refused to ease social distancing measures while their case counts were still going up. And when they did lift their lockdowns, they did it in a careful, phased manner.
Scientists say lockdowns have likely prevented hundreds of millions of infections around the world. A modeling study published in the scientific journal Nature last month estimated that by early April, shutdown policies saved 285 million people in China from getting infected, 49 million in Italy and 60 million in the US.
"I don't think any human endeavor has ever saved so many lives in such a short period of time. There have been huge personal costs to staying home and canceling events, but the data show that each day made a profound difference," said the study's lead author, Solomon Hsiang, a professor and director of the Global Policy Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley.
Just how successful a lockdown has been depends on a number of reasons, including whether it was put in place early enough. No two lockdowns are alike, so while people in countries like Italy or Spain faced fines if they ventured outside their homes for anything other than essential reasons, in Japan, staying at home was a recommendation rather than an order.
Australia, Canada, New Zealand were quick to restrict travel, while in other countries including Algeria, Georgia and Morocco, kids were the first to see the impact of the pandemic as schools shut.

Critics say lockdowns will be more damaging than the virus ...

Other measures included stay-at-home orders, non-essential store closures, quarantining and isolation. Some countries, like Algeria, Rwanda, Montenegro and China have seen outbreaks after restrictions were lifted. That prompted officials to reintroduce some measures locally.
In China, the capital city of Beijing was put under a partial lockdown last month following new cluster linked to a food market. Montenegro brought back bans on mass events last week after seeing a new outbreak of cases following a three weeks of being virus-free. And in Rwanda, health authorities placed a number of villages into renewed lockdown last week after new cases emerged there.

But the restrictions launched to counteract the disease have also been hugely damaging for the economy and have exacerbated existing inequalities in education and the workplace, as well as between genders, races and socio-economic backgrounds.
As shops and schools shut and nearly all travel ceased, hundreds of millions of people around the world have suddenly found themselves unemployed. The impact on the economy is one of the reasons why some world leaders have been pushing for swift reopening, even as infectious diseases experts warned about lifting restrictions too early.
I've read that article yesterday on the Internet and I thought how hard it is to maintain the proper balance here on the American continent between jobs (economy) and health (pandemic). ...And in any other countries of the world.
I'm so glad that I don't have to make decisions between life and death, or like some doctors in hospitals who have to decide who lives and who doesn't. If you watched some videos you know what I'm talking about; they have sometimes so many patients and not enough equipment so they normally pick the younger people to save...I think. I could post a video where the doctor doesn't even want to discuss how hard it is for him to make that choice, and he's not the only one, but I won't because I know you know too.

The U.S. could never slam the door shut on Covid, and it was never thought it would happen anyway. Cases were expected to rise after the reopenings, and the expectation (at least, here in California) was just to let it be a slow burn to keep hospitals within capacity.

Unfortunately the fast rise in cases are due to quick burns through the poorest and densest parts of the South and West. Hopefully they will burn out soon.

Slowing down spread doesn't save lives in Canada...so many Canadians seem to have forgotten what slowing the spread to save lives means, because somewhere along the way the meaning was perverted and most people just nodded their heads and didn't ask why.

We were given modelling that said 3-4% mortality rate and hospitals being decimated, that's what "stay inside, save lives, slow the spread" meant. The lives that would be saved? The ones that would go to hospital and not have a bed. That modelling turned out to be grossly flawed. The CDC best estimate at the moment is 0.26% IFR.

Current ICU occupancy (for beds equipped with ventilators) in Ontario from CVD patients? 1.2%. EDIT - sorry, it's dropped again...it's been dropping every day despite lots of protests in Toronto, gatherings in parks and beaches people are up in arms about, no masking mandates in most places, it's now at 0.9% (26 patients on ventilators out of 2811 beds) - https://covid-19.ontario.ca/

A few stumbling blocks appeared along the way suggesting herd immunity wasn't the right idea, chiefly a) we don't get immunity and b) too many people would die to reach 70%.

As more and more science has arrived we can see the stories from Singapore about being infected again were due to contaminated/false tests. HIT may be massively lower than 70%. Hospitals aren't being decimated from CVD. We have hospitals now back up to a high capacity because of surgeries finally resuming, hospitals are businesses and they don't make money sitting at 1.2% occupancy.

Masking doesn't work in western countries, we don't wear masks properly. The evidence for masking is of "low certainty" according to last months review of 39 studies on masking by The Lancet. We don't mandate policy off low certainty evidence if "science" and not politics is leading the way. We have other methods with moderate to high certainty evidence like hand washing and distancing if we want to slow the spread, yet we're not mandating those first? Seems backwards. We are seeing poor masking etiquette on a wide scale. Everywhere you look you'll see people with poor masking etiquette that you do NOT see in China or Japan. They know how to use masks.

Here in the west? Let's denigrate people who want to discuss the science and call them pu**ies as Tom Hanks so wisely did yesterday. Let's not bother attempting any sort of education on proper masking guidance at the mainstream media level, at every subway entrance, at every mall entrance, in newspapers, etc., let's just mandate it and ignore the body of science we have on what the negative effects might be and just hope for the best? That's not science.

In Canada, we have more class.

From PHAC - DON’T JUDGE OTHERS FOR NOT WEARING A MASK.
Kindness is important as some people may not be able to wear a mask or face covering

https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/hc...overing-en.pdf

That's the Canada I know. Recommendations and education work far better than mandates.

I might be "completely" missing few things, I cannot read every article and live in every corner of our planet...that would be impossible.

But I'm very happy to read what you have to say and learn some more.
We all have an opinion and no two are exactly the same, we respect them from any citizen of our society, we listen ...

We don't ignore, nobody ignore anything. We do our best to be aware, to gather more data, to analyse, to advance for a better world in a better society free of viruses, free of diseases, free of menaces to our health, to humanity's health and our surroundings...our planet, healthy and clean free to breathe.

Please post more, you have some great ideas, some positive outlook, self-appreciation of being proud to be Canadian. We can all work together with our friends Americans and Mexicans and Brazilians (South America) to be a peaceful healthy solid spot on the global map, a good example for the rest of the world to work all together @ improving all the continents, all our planet, all our people from all languages and beautiful colors and cultures. We can all share what we have plenty to the ones who have none ... good food, clean water, fresh air, equality, justice, beauty of living in harmony for 7.8 billion of us.

This pandemic doesn't prejudice, doesn't judge, doesn't make differences, doesn't do nothing to anyone's special favour. The elders are our parents, the ones who built this beautiful world we all live in...we need to save them in order to save their legacy.

We need to teach our children well ...

I work for a school district in California as a high school teacher and we just got our "orders". There will be no temperature checks for students or staff. There will be no class size restrictions. There will no minimum number of feet that desks need to be from each other. The state gave us the option for shorter four hour days, but we will not be taking that option. Everything will remain the same, except for two major changes. We will all have to wear masks and some students will be taking the class from home. That's it. If we have any issues this we have the option to resign. Glad safety is being taken seriously.

nah, that would be too realistically visceral, let’s keep it to intellectualizing numbers and triage priority scores (scroll down to the tables to learn)…. https://azdhs.gov/documents/prepared...9-addendum.pdf

Which county? I’ve got good friends (husband and wife) who are school teachers, one in LA county, the other, Orange.

Speaking of Orange, I hope people today at Huntington and Newport beaches are not reckless and show some societal responsibility.

And let’s not post a pic from the call room illustrating the concern one has for one’s wife (mine) on the front lines in the LA area trying to catch a few minutes of rest/sleep because she’s too tired to drive home –

For, no matter the respective career, Insider-ish pics and exclusives are just……blah, I guess unless one is selling or buying something.

What are you trying to say here? Is your wife on the front lines? If so, I tip my hat. Also, what does respective career insider pics are blah unless one is buying or selling mean?
