just hope the FDA isn’t negative-to-science pressured by outside interests and loses its independence like recently with the CDC as that 50% figure out of FDA I think is a nonbinding recommendation at this time

I don't think my barber is taking this things seriously with his business. At least he's going by appointment only and also requiring masks. However, he's not wearing gloves when cutting hair (nor is he washing his hands between customers) and he's reusing the same cape over and over again on every customer rather than using clean, disposable ones. Not good.

And then becomes the question of booster shots, if needed, how often? Personally, I’d settle for having to get a booster as often as every 4-6 months as it’s not like one's getting an IV infusion for protection.

Mayors from around New Mexico are striking back. This after Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham wrote an op-ed threatening to remove them from office if they don’t enforce the public health order.

“We’re trying to express to the governor and her advisors that Roswell is not Rio Rancho it’s not Raton. Each of these communities have their own separate problems and our own solutions. Work with us, don’t work against us,” said Dennis Kintigh, Mayor of Roswell.

The letter sent directly to the governor last Wednesday was written by Rio Rancho Mayor Gregg Hull but was endorsed by another 17 other mayors from all parts of the state. Hobbs Mayor Sam Cobb says they sent the letter because they all feel something needs to be done.

“Each community has individual needs and so that’s what we were trying to do, trying to get these individual needs of our respective constituents addressed,” said Cobb.

“Difficult job she has that our community has to stop, cause people are dying with this disease but to completely close the economy, destroy hundreds if not thousands of small businesses. We should think of different ways to do that,” said Cobb.

In the letter, they say the governor took the unprecedented approach of threatening to remove local officials from office if they don’t enforce the health order. That’s something Roswell mayor and former FBI Agent, Dennis Kintigh, says doesn’t scare him one bit.

“The governor’s comments about trying to defeat us, or coming after us in the future elections is interesting, and I guess I will just fall back on what I used to do for a living, for those of you who know, you know. I’ve been called worse things by more dangerous people,” said Kintigh.

Feds charge Florida man with fraud for buying Lamborghini with COVID relief funds

A Florida man was charged with fraud Monday after receiving $3.9 million in loans from the Paycheck Protection Program to buy himself, among other things, a Lamborghini sports car, authorities said.

David T. Hines of Miami, Florida, was charged with one count of bank fraud, one count of making false statements to a financial institution and one count of engaging in transactions in unlawful proceeds, according to a statement released by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Authorities allege that Hines, 29, applied on behalf of a few companies for $13.5 million in loans provided by Paycheck Protection Program, which was designed to keep small businesses afloat amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The complaint also alleges Hines lied about the amount paid to employees. Instead, he used the funds to shop at luxurious stores and resorts in Miami Beach, according to the statement.

Federal prosecutors said in a statement "that within days of receiving the PPP funds, Hines purchased a 2020 Lamborghini Huracan sports car for approximately $318,000, which he registered jointly in his name and the name of one of his companies."

In the days and weeks following the disbursement of PPP funds, the complaint alleges that Hines did not make payroll payments that he claimed on his loan applications. He did, however, make purchases at luxury retailers and resorts in Miami Beach.

Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act in March to help Americans and businesses suffering from the economic fallout amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Senate Republicans unveiled a $1 trillion coronavirus pandemic aid package that includes a second round of $1,200 stimulus payments and a "sequel" to the Paycheck Protection Program which would help hard-hit firms with 300 or fewer workers a second opportunity to draw from the fund.

Interesting NY Times article about getting reinfected (extremely rare, and no cases have been proven to exist so far, despite click bait news articles) and regarding natural immunity (both from getting covid and recovering, and from having some immunity from prior cold coronaviruses.

Also have been hearing and reading that masks do indeed protect the user (as I have always suspected, it's common sense), and that, if you do get covid wearing a mask, you'll likely be much less sick or asymptomatic, since the level of sickness is related to the amount of virus you are exposed to. That's one reason why there are far more asymptomatic cases than there were earlier (part of it is increased testing of course, but also people aren't getting as sick as before, because they're wearing masks). Some estimates as high as 95% of cases in some areas are asymptomatic.

I think elementary schools should proceed before junior and high schools.

For one thing, parents can still work with older children staying at home, while ounger kids creates a daycare crisis for many families if schools are closed.

Children under 12 have been shown to be much less infectious than kids 12 and older. So risk to teachers is reduced.

Elementary kids have the same teacher all day so pods will be smaller.

Older kids can easier learn at home and need less parental supervision, as they have already developed more independent learning skills. So they will be less negatively impacted by remote learning.

So I think one way to go about it is to open elementary schools only, for this semester, and see how it goes. They can use some of the teachers from the higher grades to assist with making class sizes smaller and being substitute teachers. After all, zoom classes only last an hour or two.

Have people in Sweden been wearing masks lately? Or has behavior been essentially the same since the pandemic started? If the latter, then the reason for the sharp decline is because the denser areas of the populace (which are also the most dangerous to other areas, as they are most likely to have high risk jobs and take public transport) have developed some degree of immunity.

Edit: Just did some research and indeed the people of Sweden have not been wearing masks for the most part. So it must be natural immunity bringing R down below 1. The same is going to happen here in the U.S., natural immunity bringing R back down.

The news in the UK is full of holiday makers complaining about quarantining after coming home from Spain. Sorry? You're adults that knew that might be a risk, once restrictions were lifted, you knew the situation is nebulous and might change. Yet you took the risk anyway. I'm not knocking people wanting to get away, just their reactions to something they knew was a possibility. We maybe living under a 2 steps forward 3 steps back lifestyle for a while.

And people who talk to reporters with their masks below their noses ... that's why you're going into quarantine for 14 days.

It was also amazing that none of those interviewed were going back to working from home, or at least no-one mentioned it.

It might also be beneficial if we start testing people 7 days into their fortnights away, it's not going to catch everyone, but it would certainly help, although I'm sure people will say they were tested so they don't have to quarantine.
