Looks like Spain is having a major outbreak in cases again, nearly 9,000 over the weekend alone. I think this calls into question any sort of herd immunity at a lower threshold. Italy too are seeing surges in numbers.

Gosh that's depressing.

That pisses me off. These idiots think that just giving the middle finger to Covid is some kind of shield. Kinda reminds me of the drunk guy standing up and giving the middle finger to the Las Vegas shooter.

Complete selfishness that could set us back months and months.

500,000. They come from all over the US then they leave to go home. Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

The main things that have an impact on corona viruses spread is fear and the steps people take when they are afraid. If large numbers start dying people socially distance better and wear masks in even less risky scenarios. They also go out less and take less risks in general. The problem is fear doesn’t last forever and unless the government has taken proper steps to eradicate the virus then a surge is inevitable.

Getting case numbers low isn’t good enough if you want society to go back to normal you need to eradicate it from an area and have proper quarantined as people enter the area or new surges are inevitable.

There's also the fact that most people just don't care.

I mean it’s not like America has one hot spot which will infect all the other states. Its kind of bad everywhere so idk if you could even detect the increase this will cause spread over the whole country. It will do somthing but it’s probably not much worse then 500k people going out to eat across the country since the virus is already basically everywhere.

500000 people is a lot especially if a bunch of them got it.

Celebs can afford to not go out and avoid being around to many people. Celebs also don’t have much to do with productions halted and no new movies coming out. Basically the only risks celebs take is self inflicted but the average person needs to work to eat and pay for health insurance. They can limit their risks personally but they can’t do much about the risks their work puts on them.

NMSU had a player or coach test positive, not sure why they think they're going to play anyway, our beloved governor has said there will be no contact sports in New Mexico this year.

Wife went and got tested yesterday (drive thru) - she lucked out and got the throat swab.

Got the results back today and she was negative.

Pretty impressed with the turnaround time.

I don't know. Perhaps better to look at a more specific area that was hit hard and now is spiking again, rather than a whole country? I'm really not familiar with the areas in Spain or Italy that got slammed this Spring, but I doubt the whole country got infection rates from 15 to 20% initially.

I read that the outbreaks are tied to night clubs. Hard to believe those are allowed to be open anywhere. Probably one the highest risk businesses of all, if not the highest.

Does anyone here feel that we will somehow get through this?

I'm starting to have doubts, even with a vaccine. Because a vaccine will not be 100% effective (SOURCE) and not everyone will opt to get it. So our only hopes is for this virus to somehow disappear. After two years of hell, the Spanish Flu eventually disappeared without a vaccine. I wonder if the Coronavirus will end up the same way...

It’s not like they haven’t had it tough enough for years….decades, before this pandemic; nevertheless, “The messaging from leadership was clear – wear your masks, wash your hands, and maintain social distancing at all times”, the result

You really think those of us who care whether or not it is eradicated want to wait another 18 months?

Yeah. I agree with you there. I'm literally stunned about his diagnosis. What a way to celebrate your 60th.

EDIT:

The welsh actor Jonathan Pryce from The Two Popes had been in hospital with it for a week in March.

Hopefully he and everyone else this year in the 60+ demographic will survive to their 61st at least.

Yes because that seems to be what people want. Everyday on the news, I keep hearing about large gatherings of people with no masks. It just seems like the world doesn’t care and that’s why cases continue to rise.
