FYI.... This pandemic will not end, unfortunately.

Strangely, Gov Cuomo addressed the ticket situation a few months ago in one of the news conferences (back when they were simulcasted on CNN). They were taking a staggering amount of phone calls to the police just from people narcing/reporting about people walking around with no mask, it would be impossible to enforce.

You'd have to make the entire city turn into Permit Patty (CNN article for reference)

But what baffles me is how people think it's ok to wear with the nose exposed. In case anyone hasn't realized, my question was sarcastic. It's like, businesses have this policy where you have no mask, then no entry. Ok fair enough. But then people have a mask over their mouth with their nose exposed and businesses are like, come on in!! I mean, what's that about?? IMHO, a mask with the nose exposed is just as bad as not wearing a mask.

You know this isn't the first time we tried to close all the bars. I wonder just how many speakeasy bars are currently running in the country? Hell some of the bars still have the fake walls ready built etc from the last time this was going on.

Its even the 100 year anniversary for speakeasy bars talk about timing.

Well our bars are open again as of Saturday, I would imagine that's the part that excites our GM the most. I know most restaurants can't re-open indoors at 25%, feels like a crappy olive branch more than anything else for most restaurants.

I'm concerned about a family gathering tomorrow. For the first time since the pandemic started, my girlfriend's family is getting together tomorrow evening for pizza, and just to see each other and visit a bit.

I of course see my girlfriend regularly, and she and her sister shares her parent's house, so her folks and us are connected anyways. They wear masks in stores and take precautions. She and her sister work from home now and their parents are retired.

But the rest of their family is more active and have their own lives in their own homes. Several of them do work (one works with the elderly), and in general I don't know how they have been handling this regarding precautions. I would hope they are following guidelines, but you never know. There will be probably between 11-14 people there inside, mostly in the kitchen/dining room area, where we usually chat, eat, and play games. Their grandmother who is over 90 will be there - it's kind of to celebrate her birthday.

On the one hand I'm very nervous about this. I'm leaning towards staying home. But I would like to see them. And even if I don't go, my girlfriend and her folks will anyways, and then I'll see her and her sister the next day anyways, as she comes over every couple weeks to visit (it's the only visitors I have).

Seems like if I don't go I'll be missing the chance to see them perhaps the only time this year (who knows what will happen with the holidays), and I'll be exposed anyways through my girlfriend and her sister. But I feel really nervous about being in a room with 10+ people all not wearing masks, even though I know them all. Their family is separate from my girlfriend's so I can't help but worry. This is the kind of thing you read about. In general my state has been very good with the handling of this crisis (masks are required in any stores, being careful about re-opening).

Not sure what to do. Plus my hair is a disaster since I haven't had it cut since before the pandemic. I'm kind of embarrassed by it now. I've been afraid to go get it cut. In the stores nobody knows me with my mask on. I could have risked getting it cut for tomorrow, but then I'm exposing myself to another moderate activity, just before gathering, which is a bad idea.

I think I'd rather go with the wild and wooly look over attempting to cut my own hair. My girlfriend won't even try it.

Schools started back here yesterday in Kentucky. I had to make a tough choice and leave my job with the school system to help get my kids through their online learning phase. My wife, also in the school system as a teacher, is at the school. Keep going back and forth emotionally on it, but in the end, I know I did the best thing for my family and my kids. Financially, we'll be okay, and I'm hopeful other opportunities will open up when the time comes.

Just gotta keep my head up. Kids had a safe and quiet learning environment yesterday and I'm thankful for that.

everyone has their own risk factor limits and no one is right or wrong and every personal decision should be respected....IMO, listening to what you wrote, you shouldnt put yourself in a position that will make you uncomfortable. if youre too worried about covid to get a haircut, i think thats your answer right there.....yes, your wife will still be around everyone but you can only make the best decision for yourself and hope for the best

If your girlfriend is going to be exposed anyway, you may as well go. At least you can keep an eye on her and keep from prolonged close contact encounters.

In general I would avoid face to face conversions, especially lasting more than a few minutes. Would be a good idea to look sideways slightly when talking to the person (and when the person talks to you), so that the airflow from talking doesn't go directly towards the person. I've heard that up to 1000x more viral particles travel when talking rather than just breathing. Talking is what really spreads the virus. Stay away from talking airflows.

keeping mingling, don't stay near someone too long. Spend as much time outside as possible (use it as a "break" from the inside aerosols every 15 minutes or so).

Not a good idea to have the family eating and talking together at a table. I would avoid that.

My wife cut my hair a few months ago. It was her first, but it wasn't that bad. Looks like crap now. Need to get it cut but most places are closed as they only allow outdoor haircut here in California. Maybe I'll just have her cut it again.

Masks should cover the nose obviously, but covering your face is 95% of the effectiveness, IMO. You can't talk through your nose and the airflow from nose breathing is directed straight down to the floor.

Besides, face coverings don't do much to stop aerosols anyway, just the droplets.

Our provincial health expert in one of her recent briefings stated that 'family gatherings' were the #1 attack vector that they're seeing.
