And how does she know she's not carrying it? For the first few days you don't know you have it. At any time she could get it and wouldn't know for days while she continues to go out in public and put others at risk.

As somebody else said in another thread, our parents were asked to go to war. We're being asked to stay home for a couple weeks and people can't handle it.

Places are closing all over the country. I think that's a pretty strong message that they don't want you to come. My girlfriend was sent home from work half-way through today after somebody in her office started showing possible symptoms. She was given a work laptop and now she's working from home.

If true, that’s awesome. That’s whats needed in this country. We should never rely on government for everything, no matter who happens to be sitting in the WH at the moment. The government, federal, will always be slow to respond to major crisis/disasters. State governments should also step up and prepare for national and state emergencies.

my point is, people are still going to grocery stores and a few other places, correct? EVERYONE doing that is potentially infecting others. i also mentioned that the article gave no mention of what she is actually doing. she mentioned to wash hands. what else can anyone do? she said she wouldnt QUARANTINE, meaning if she were to get sick, shed go out. obviously that is ridiculous but at this point, its just talk.

lol, some places are closing while some aren't. if theyre open for business, one would assume people are showing up.

i get what youre all saying but the fact that things ARENT shut downs means some people arent going to the measures that certain others are. which also furthers my point that slowing this curve in this country will be EXTREMELY difficult to do. for some, closing their doors means and end to the business

What looks like a promising cure is becoming available (first test in France showed a 100% success rate when the 50-year old Malaria drug was combined with an antibiotic within 6 days, over half within 3 days). Maybe not 100% in reality, but hell, it's cheap and it appears effective and may lift this damn cloud up before it gets too dark on the ground.

I'm amazed how something like this could even occur.

This is the 21st century. Something like this should not happen on the size and scale its happening.

China and other Asian countries have been using it with success, but Doctors here didn't seem to be following any of that. I actually wrote about it last week when a 32 year old in NJ (who's still hospitalized) had to bridge the gap between his doctors, and those in China to get them to use chloroquine, and other drugs, which he credits with saving his life. Hopefully it becomes a standard of treatment for everyone.

From March 14

Quote:
What really angers me about this is it doesn't seem like a lot of US doctors are following treatment protocols that worked in China. Specifically, the combination of Tamiflu, and two anti-HIV medications among others has been shown to reduce the impact of the virus.

The otherwise healthy 32 year old physician's assistant James Cai, who got in in NJ, and sounded like death, thanks his connections to doctors in China with saving his life. His medical team here weren't following the treatment regimen there, so he engaged in a communication between China, and the US, and eventually got the doctors here to treat him with an anti-malarial, and anti-HIV drug, which helped him turn the corner on this thing.

Quote:
James Cai, a 32-year-old physician’s assistant, remains hospitalized Thursday at Hackensack University Medical Center, where he’s now only experiencing a cough and fatigue after 11 days of battling the virus.

“Fortunately I have the resources and knowledge about it. I would be dead and gone already,” Cai told The Post in a text message.

He credited several Chinese doctors with helping his providers here better understand the infectious disease taking over his body.

“Most medical providers here don’t know about it,” Cai said. “Medical providers need to communicate with Chinese medical teams.”

It was only with the Chinese experts’ encouragement that they agreed to perform a coronavirus test, he said.

When it came back positive, they recommended he be treated with the antimalarial medicine chloroquine and the HIV drug Kaletra.

“Chinese experts suggest to treat with medicine to slow the virus first. Don’t wait,” he said. “Definitely I would not be here today [without them].”

Cai said since he was otherwise healthy, he fears how those who are older will fare fighting the virus.

“I am young. [People who are] 40 years and above [will] definitely not be making it,” Cai said.

I'm surprised that it doesn't happen more often, especially with advanced travel and increased urbanization/population growth.

Thinking that we're above this is forgetting that we're still just part of the food chain at the end of the day.

How naive. No matter how many immunities are developed in the 21st Century, it doesn’t mean immunity to hardship.

That Malaria drug thing is encouraging. All it takes is a bit of positive news to get the markets back up and people feeling better/panicking less. There's way too much alarmism going on (is that a new word?)

This is really sad. A relatively healthy 34-year-old man dies from COVID-19; recently visited Disney World.

Dear patients and community members,

We need to take this seriously, NOW.

In just a week, we’ve gone from 7 to over 50 confirmed COVID-19 (coronavirus) cases. The real number of local cases in the Eagle River Valley is more likely hundreds if not thousands of people. It is everywhere here; we just don’t have the test results to prove it, and we won’t anytime soon.

As we’ve seen in other countries, the way this disease spreads exponentially means it starts slow and then explodes and overwhelms hospitals and the healthcare system. This pattern stalls the healthcare system’s ability to adequately care for the surge of the severely sick and dying. This is what we are seeing in Italy and Spain right now.

The most effective way to shorten the cycle of the COVID-19 virus is to be diligent about practicing social distancing - reducing or eliminating gatherings that actually spread the virus in the community. We’ve seen this work in China and South Korea. The United States and Colorado have followed suit as evidenced by public health orders from Governor Polis and our own Eagle County public health department.

The truth is, if we don’t commit to disciplined social distancing now, our 56-bed Vail Health Hospital will be overflowing within 2-4 weeks. We will not have enough respirators to keep people alive, and locals of all ages will be dying. The other hospitals in America will be full too. We’ve already had a handful of COVID-19 patients transported to Denver for more advanced care; however, once the Denver hospitals are full, we will no longer be able to transport these people to a lower elevation.

As prepared as our hospital, County and public health department have tried to be, it won’t matter if we, as community members, relax on the importance of social distancing. We were one of the first communities in the state and nation to start aggressively testing, with Colorado’s first drive-up testing center open on March 6 in Gypsum. We set up a mobile emergency department trailer outside our hospital to protect patients and staff. We’ve done more tests per capita than any community in America. But the results are trickling in, and an inaccurate picture has been painted. Regardless of the number of confirmed cases, we are experiencing significant community spread; when someone is infected, but we aren’t sure where or how.

We have all been told it takes 24-48 hours to get test results, but it’s taking 3-5 days or more, and it’s getting worse. We have 400 local tests awaiting results, and we expect many of them to be positive. In the meantime, we are sending on average 70 samples for testing per day, and we’ve switched from the state testing center to commercial labs to hopefully speed up our results. We are prioritizing the limited medical resources to test the highest risk patients, healthcare providers, and others that are dedicated to this community response and we are using every channel possible to increase the turn-around time for the tests we do run.

Social norms are incredibly hard to adjust, but saving our Valley means starting now. Psychologically, when things feel safe at home, we feel safe in general. Don’t be fooled. Everything non-essential has to stop or close for now. It also means we have to cancel everything, and that goes against who we are as humans. This means no more dinners with friends, casual kid Nerf gun wars in the neighborhood, or basketball at the park. It’s going to be hard and feel wrong on many levels. But, it’s supposed to be hard because we are fighting a war of life and death right now. Not tomorrow, but now. It’s time to wake up. Sacrifices must be made, or we will lose people we know and love. At this moment, the focus must be on keeping lots of people from dying. Every three days, the number of infected individuals will continue to double unless social isolation is adopted by everyone here.

Thank you to Eagle County, our school district, many businesses and Vail Resorts for rolling out restrictions or closing up shop. As one of the most popular international ski communities in the world, people from all over the globe have been traveling to our Valley for the past three months. Many have brought COVID-19 here or taken it back to their homes. Like generations before us who united as a nation during world conflicts, we must now practice that same collective action and selflessness against an invisible enemy. We are all in this together. Please be part of the solution.

Every person and family in this Valley must start social distancing NOW.
