I hate to say this, but big cities with cases are going to have to lock down to keep the rest of the country outside the cities from getting infected via community acquisition/community spread. Los Angeles included, unfortunately. (edit: I mean, spread more than it already has. lock it down from tourists, shelter in place)
Geez, was that 1182 confirmed cases out of 8000 tested? Wonder how many were turned away versus tested, etc. 15% positives sounds like a whole lot. I'd imagine nearly everyone, symptomatic or not, is wanting to get tested for it right now. And people may even make up symptoms just to get tested anyway.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/03/19/n...rk-update.html

A jump in testing yields a spike in new cases.
A few days ago, New York State was testing only a few hundred people a day for coronavirus.

From Wednesday night to Thursday morning, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said, the state processed the tests of 7,584 people.

The testing has increased as dozens of private laboratories in the state received authorization to test for the virus. Two government-run labs had shouldered most of New York’s testing until recently.

The huge increase in testing capacity and the quickening spread of the virus yielded sobering news: more than 2,200 newly discovered cases in New York State. The case count in the state has more than quadrupled since Monday.

The total as of Thursday afternoon was more than 5,200 cases statewide, up from about 3,000 cases on Wednesday. There were more than 750 people hospitalized statewide. At least 29 people had died of the virus in New York State.

Mr. Cuomo has said the virus has spread so widely that the increase in the number of confirmed cases reflected New York’s added testing capacity more than anything else.

The addition of three drive-through testing centers has helped expand that capacity. The first opened last Friday in New Rochelle, the state’s original virus hot spot. A second opened on Tuesday at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island, and a third opened on Staten Island on Thursday.

Did you read the article? He had asthma and bronchitis multiple times as a kid. This man sadly had very little chance of survival if he came in contact with the coronavirus. The underlining issues he had are what the virus attacks the most. The majority of the people that have passed from this virus had a history of asthma or some sort of breathing problem. This is why doctors are urging people to stay at home.

Really sad story either way, May this man Rest In Peace.

Yes I did. Just assumed if he didn’t have any issues as an adult with asthma that he would still be considered a healthy male in his 30s. It is very sad.

Honestly pet groomers lawn services and Best Buy are also staying open. Personally I don’t think restaurants are an essential service but I guess people have to have their coffee. I wonder if candy shops can stay open with how silly this shelter in place thing has been set up.

My best friend has asthma so I have been following other people that have asthma and the virus and it just seems so random. For instance, actor Idris Elba has asthma and the virus and his symptoms were very mild.

I did read that Idris has asthma and he was also hospitalized after he suffered a severe asthma attack a few years ago. It’s good to know that his symptoms were mild. You’re exactly right that it is super random at this time which makes COVID-19 so unpredictable right now.

I do have to ask though. How many of you are actually ready in the event that shtf? Do you have any training in firearms, wildness survival, hunting, cleaning and preparing game? If not then I strongly recommend you look into these things. How to treat water and things like starting fires without matches and lighters. Basic things like this are always good to know regardless of if things get bad.
Remember you don't have to be in the woods or country to learn how to do these things. Reading or watching videos on YT is always a start.
My area has been a hurricane magnet the last 3 out of 4 years, so, I'm pretty prepped.

People with asthma can still have a strong enough immune system to fight it off without progressing to the severe symptoms. That guy was a few years removed from cancer so his immune system was likely a mess and then once developing the pneumonia the asthma turned into a bigger issue.

Asthma is classified based on severity, which is determined by symptoms and lft’s. I would suspect that those with moderate or severe persistent asthma are more at risk with complications from COVID-19.

I was coughing a lot today and I told someone I think I have coronavirus, they said "no you don’t, you’re stupid" and about 10 minutes after that I stopped coughing. I guess I’m good.

California governor issues statewide 'stay at home' order over coronavirus

Quote:
LOS ANGELES, March 19 (Reuters) - California's governor on Thursday issued a statewide "stay at home order" directing residents to leave their homes only when necessary during the coronavirus pandemic.

Governor Gavin Newsom said that modeling has shown that 56 percent of California residents were expected to contract COVID-19 over the next eight weeks, requiring nearly 20,000 more hospital beds than the state could currently provide.

Newsom earlier on Thursday asked President Donald Trump to send a U.S. Navy hospital ship to the port of Los Angeles "immediately" as the state braces for the expected surge in the number of coronavirus cases.

He said Los Angeles, as the nation's second-largest city, would likely be "disproportionately impacted" by the pandemic in the coming weeks.

In a separate letter sent to U.S. congressional leaders, the governor asked for additional federal funding for unemployment insurance and social safety net programs and aid to small businesses, schools and universities.
