I got picked last (too much of a geek) at school, and this has made me realise that I had several classmates who had asthma and I was always picked after them! This was in the 1980s so it was not due to political correctness or a feeling of positive well-being towards them in particular. It was me being useless

Is it me or HDR10 looks overblown and over saturated compared to Dolby Vision? Even the 20th Century Fox logo in HDR10 looks too rich and vivid

From what I've seen, HDR10 looks a bit under-saturated compared to DV. Also, you can't really use the 20th Century Fox logo as a comparison, considering there is no way to see that in DV.

Have you ever compared the same movie in HDR10 vs DV? HDR10 makes colors pop even too much, to the point that image looks a little over the top, losing the natural feel that DV brings to home theater.
I was not referring to the 20th centuryfox logo, sorry. I was referring to the other logos (one all in blue at the begining of every disc, and the other one with the eagle)

To be fair, I have only compared one DV disc (The Fate of the Furious). But I have also seen many DV movies on VUDU, and compared them to their HDR10 discs. To my eyes, DV always makes colors pop a bit more than HDR10. I haven't seen an HDR10 movie that is more colorful than it's DV counterpart.

I think it's more "blown/washed out" color vs. "bright color with highlights & details within".

For those not qualifying for access to ITU documents ^

but still interested in this advanced topic and happen to be attending the upcoming SMPTE 2017 annual technical conference & exhibition in Hollywood, then sit in on the following session on Thursday morning (10/26) in Salon 2….

Hitting the Mark - A New Color Difference Metric for HDR and WCG Imagery

"With the emerging demand for high-dynamic-range (HDR) and wide-color-gamut (WCG) technologies, display and projector manufacturers are racing to extend their color primaries in the cinema and in the home. With these brighter and wider colors, the question is: in calibration, how close is close enough? This answer is increasingly important for both the consumer and professional display/projector market as they balance design trade-offs. With HDR/WCG technology, an increasing issue is that many of the color difference metrics in common use today, such as ΔE00, substantially deviate from human perception and become unreliable for measuring color differences. This causes under and over prediction of color differences and can to lead to suboptimal design decisions and difficulties during calibration. There is a large amount of perceptual color difference data in the field today, however the majority was collected using reflective surfaces and very little reaches the boundaries of modern display capabilities. To provide a better tool for facilitating design choices, this paper will present a "ground truth" visible color difference dataset. These visual experiments were conducted between luminance levels of 0.1 and 1000 cd/m2 on high dynamic range laser cinema projectors with approximate BT.2100 color primaries. We will present our findings, compare against current metrics, and propose specifying color tolerances using the ΔICtCp metric for HDR and WCG imagery."

This is likely a function of your OLED display not having enough brightness for HDR10 that DV is compensating for. On brighter displays the difference between the two is quite minimal.

I disagree. I have an Oled C6 and on it HDR10 looks brighter and more over saturated

Quick question. I have a Sony X900E, and I'm having trouble dialing in default HDR settings that I like. There's just too much variation between different UHD discs.

I know the LG C7 OLED has an "active HDR" tone mapping feature. Does this help to produce a more consistent picture between UHDs?

Too much variation in what exactly? Brightness? Contrast? Peak Luminance?

Progress note regarding ongoing work within the American Society of Cinematographers Next Generation Cinema Display Subcommittee or NGCD, for short - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post12847729

The subcommittee is assembling a collection of content for evaluation on a cinema-sized HDR display later this year. With that as source content, there will be evaluation of the influence on the artistic values of dynamic range, dynamic luminance adjustment (if utilized), peak white, frame rate, limited resizing, and compressed bit rate with HDR content. The outcome of this effort will be to issue recommendations pertaining to theatrical HDR.

My Galaxy S8+ has an AMOLED screen that can produce a brightness level of over 1000 nits. YouTube has added HDR to the version on this smartphone. All I can say is that HDR material from YouTube looks fantastic!

Throwback Thursday post - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...n#post14016002 with update to last August.

Word is it’s going to be difficult, but they’re still hoping to meet a target date of late December wrt a commercial installation for Angelinos, don’t turn skeptical if install gets pushed back a little later.
