So, what does this all mean? It means, why even produce a 4K DCP for D-Cinema exhibition quality if you’re going to bit starve the encoding to less than 100 GB. If you run the math, in essence what has taken place is that a 4K rez motion picture has almost been turned into a 2K rez motion picture.

To PeterTHX and other Trekkies –
After I posted this earlier today…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...mp#post7542631 someone PM’ed me the following YouTube clip (apparently almost 5 million hits in less than a week) to round out everything imaginably Hobbit-related…. Context, credit Variety…http://variety.com/2013/digital/news...el-1200476808/ I had no idea of the background ^. |

Joe Kane on 4K.
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1471727/joe-kane-on-4k Doesn't sound like most people will notice any difference. I saw 4K this week on the 84" LG and maybe it was tiny bit sharper that was it. Sounds like added colorspace might be the greatest step forward. |

kris,
I don’t have time to watch the videoclip, I even missed his presentation at the last SMPTE Hollywood Section meeting (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...oe#post7457699 but, I can tell you if Joe strongly asserts that…'most people will not notice any difference' then, as executives in the Blu-ray industry didn’t think much of Joe during and after the format war, I guess pretty much all executives in the consumer electronics industry won’t think much of him now with his comments about 4K. ![]() Is there an accurate synopsis or transcript of what he said online anywhere? I would be particularly interested about what he exactly said about increased bit depth and gamma as it relates to D-Cinema, if indeed he covered that topic. I’m also wondering if the interview indicates that Joe doesn’t see the BIG picture, i.e. the last paragraph here… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...al#post7325076 As an aside, just reading the OP (#1) of that AVS thread, if people are making a big deal out of calling UHD ‘2160p’ (rather than ‘4K’), they simply don’t understand the value of marketing speak ![]() https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...op#post5724086 |

http://www.cinenow.co.uk/videos/320-...hd-dvd-formats Because, for #1, as Joe conveniently failed to mention in his snapshot of the state of HD software (Blu-ray), Sony was actively investigating using advanced codes around the time of Joe’s interview…. “Don also briefly touched on the fact that Sony is investigating using AVC and/or VC-1 (they have had Microsoft in to demonstrate it). He did say that they are likely to adopt AVC rather than VC-1, but I suppose time will tell…. http://www.avforums.com/forums/blu-r...on-eklund.html And, for #2, I don’t think that mpeg2 was quite as poor as Joe portrayed it, if you carefully read the response of the observer in the demo when comparing the sample of Black Hawk Down to its D5 master. I would say, not bad for an interim Blu-ray codec before AVC became fully baked. Granted it was much less efficient than AVC or VC-1 but of course HD DVD *the superior quality format* didn’t have working 50 GB discs. And, most importantly for #3, if the goal was to provide consumers with ‘the best quality format’, Joe also conveniently failed to mention that the data bandwidth capability for HD DVD was 30 Mbit/s compared to 48 Mbit/s for Blu-ray, as I don’t remember hearing that in the interview either. So, the point is, as I noted yesterday, unlike with his tunnel-visioned assessment of Blu-ray back in the day, I hope Joe realizes that it is important is to provide a migration path to the 'ideal' world of the new standard (4K) and that pathway is being blazed by first generation 4K and the consumers who purchase them…which should be a personal decision. |

Reminds me, when I get more time to check the correct spelling translation of some foreign films, I’ll post a very short mini-list of international films (and perhaps some commercials, etc.) which constitute original 4K cinematic content, but which imbd has no technical information on (or, perhaps not even any listing of, as of this date)….because most readers I assume have never heard about them but nevertheless are worthwhile to keep an eye on for the quality of their delivered imagery.
I speak a little French so, right now, I can contribute the flick..Même pas mal |

^ I’m not one much for celebrity ‘video gurus’ nor, for that matter, celebrity Blu-ray reviewers. I’m much more interested in the people, and what they do, whom most hobbyists never really hear much about because they are too busy conducting controlled scientific studies like this (last paragraph) -

So does that mean you’re one of those projectionists who has been ripping from the Blu-ray disc and transferring it to the main server at your Cineplex?.....jk
Keep in mind, if one is a picture quality cinephile, you kind of like to see those larger JPEG2000 file sizes because prevailing wisdom suggests that when one is projecting digital images on a BIG screen, less compression translates into higher resolution. ![]() |

Definitely, but just for the record, JPEG 2000 also supports a mathematically lossless compression mode which makes it possible to recreate the original image without any loss of information. This isn’t used in the DCP but could be used for archiving high quality material...http://www.media-matters.net/docs/Wh...ers/WPMJ2k.pdf

Something I always get, but yesterday I received some more PMs (more than usual) as to what is the significance of my avatar or what does it mean?
I’ll answer all those PMs here en masse with a F/U film-making post. Just give me a little time to hunt down the appropriate visual aids so I don’t have to do too much off-topic typing. In short, it’s all motor-sickle related. In the meantime, to give all those PMers a little idea as to what it means, I recently made this post in reference to The Great Escape…. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...&postcount=677 |
