from the article - “As well as HDR, a higher frame rate (HFR) will be ushered into the specification, but this is expected to take several years longer than other features, likely in 2019.”

So, in the pursuit of further learning, pertaining to HFR, which is still in the most earliest stage of development, thusly, not talked about much in the AV press as compared to 4K or HDR, but nevertheless, very important because sports is a BIG driver of TV sales and HFR is particularly suited to fast motion genres, i.e. sports.

What are the challenges and issues standards bodies are now considering with regards to eventually implementing HFR as the next gen parameter for TVs?

Well, the overhead in terms of distribution of HFR content when you do compression with HEVC is actually insignificant but…..the bandwidth load in production is doubled and that’s a challenge on interfaces and storage, for example. Plus, with HFR, standards bodies must deal with the issue of backward compatibility, i.e. what happens within the installed base of 60p TVs when you distribute 120 Hz out?

Do you have them skip every other frame?

Or is there a workable backward compatibility possible?

Or should thee issue just be ignored and do consumer electronics companies then ultimately *force* consumers to buy new TVs to enjoy the upgrade in clarity with fast motion genres?

These ^ are the difficult issues/challenges in standards bodies’ discussions with regards to HFR at the moment.

Great point about HFR content above. Lyris mentioned a while back that HFR doesn't present major bandwidth challenges for compression because the increased amount of frames increases the similarities from one frame to the next which is what interframe codecs thrive upon; it will make the compression easier, not harder! But I completely forgot about the bandwidth issues for the broadcast people having to wrangle the data at the source prior to compression.

I wonder if Rosenblatt misspoke or was misquoted here. The "last Mission: Impossible" is of course Rogue Nation. But since he has the relationship with J.J. and all of the other films mentioned J.J. directed (even if Rosenblatt wasn't attached as a co-producer), I trust he's referring to Mission: Impossible-III?

Bad Robot produced Rogue Nation and it had a Dolby Cinema release.

Ahh, yes--thanks for the reminder. Glad I haven't purchased Rogue yet.

On another Par note, I hope 13 Hours will be amongst their first UHD BDs.

And perhaps one of the subplots for the screenwriter being the real world fact that one of the other players on his team (Leicester City) motioned to the heavens after scoring a goal as a tribute to his girlfriend’s mother who had lost her life 6 weeks earlier in a terrorist attack.

I guess the adaptation is inevitable (especially if certain future events transpire), but I just can't see Leo Deo as Jamie Vardy.

^ I think I’ve always held a special fondness in my heart for movies based upon true events and accomplishments by special (real) people against all odds, somewhat similar to the one now currently available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, watch the nbcnews videoclip posted in the next to the last paragraph after the technical discussion with my friend Geoff from last December.

Even better if such movies can inspire to precipitate change in the real world in order to help make individuals and/or society a better (unselfish) place to live.

A new vizio P series owner over at avs was able to get his hands on a spectracal dolby vision calibration software tool. He posted some before and after pictures and it made quite a big difference in the oversaturated and incorrect colors.

I don't believe there is an HDR10 calibration program as advanced as the dolby vision calibration tool. I will post the comparison pictures later.

Rumour suggests a GPU twice as powerful as the PS4. 4K disc playback as well. Essentially making it a next gen console. I have ordered the VR headset so I am a bit miffed at the moment.

Mavrick supplied info about the rumour in the Ps4 thread Penton Man. I don't want to step on his toes so if you want to have a look?

The closest we have to confirmation is from a proven industry insider over at gaf. Anyone that knows Neogaf knows that they vet "insiders" so it's as close we can get until a statement from Sony. But I doubt that will come until at least E3 in June.

Quote:
Related info from a meeting we had yesterday was waiting for it to be approved before posting.

Price is currently $399.99 they were discussing a better CPU which would raise the price to $499.99 we were guaranteed the price will be no higher than $499.99 (He mentioned the CPU upgrade quite a bit almost as if they haven't really decided on a final spec could be a pricing issue.) also there is currently no plan for any type of trade in program for current PS4 users but that could change.

They stated that the GPU is twice as powerful as standard PS4 and much faster. They did not say exactly how fast but that is was running at a higher clock speed while being much smaller than the original.

It will have a 4k blu ray player and will upscale games that are not natively 4k.

Also there was talk of some sort of VR lounge for the media player app which is supposed to be getting a substantial upgrade.

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."
We were also given a list of games that will be available at launch that will directly take advantage of the PS4K where the differences are and I will quote him "Significant."

For the PSVR

Eve Valkyrie
Robinson
GT Sport

For the PS4K

Deep Down (Thought this was dead)
GOW4 (This was the exact abbreviation on the sheet I can only assume its god of war 4)

There were more games on the list but these are the ones that stood out to me.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head I'll see if I can get any more information.
