Lets not turn this into a streaming vs disc debate, that was not my intention.

Just find it odd you are happy to stream instead of bluray but are interested in 4k optical disc.

Please do not turn this is into a disc vs stream. I had thought 4k streaming was a pipe dream, but I guess not.

I really want to know if there is a disc in the pipeline, the reason is that if streaming hits consumers first, does this mean there is no disc even being discussed?

I'm currently running a 60". I thought it was big when i got it, but it has shrunk over time. For me, it's not worth it to drop this kind of money to gain 4K and 5".

Sharp's 80" 2K TV goes for about $4,500-5000. I suspect we'll see the prices on the bigger 4K models come down within 1-2 years. I bet at this 4K resolution, they will be pushing 90-105" sizes soon, which will make the 80-84" drop like a rock.
Exactly. Who really wants to go smaller at this point?

When I talked with a sony rep. the plan was downloading content then at some point they would have physical media once 4K became more popular. They did think that some may stream movies but seemed to think that downloading would be preferred to avoid hiccups when watching.

I was told the blu-ray disc could hold 4K content but you know how it is when they decide on a new format. The number one thing is preventing people from copying it. I plan to avoid 4K due to issues with copy protection on blu-ray and constant updating of firmware until the company finally decides to stop supporting a model then if you want to watch newer movies you need to by a new player. I hope that won't be an issue with 4K.

I know my netflix keeps hanging on me time to time. I don't mind since it is not in my theater.

Of course that is something fundamental to digital video cameras and has been in use before any RED products existed. But it appears they were granted a patent for this concept.
^ Speaking of which, Blackmagic was demoing a new 4K camera which the booth guy told me offers “visually lossless” compressed RAW (CinemaDNG).

Based on how the complaint against Sony reads, looks like RED now has someone else they can sue for *patent infringement* and also file an injunction to have all their (Blackmagic) 4K cameras destroyed.

Brightest panel at NAB…http://nab13.mapyourshow.com/5_0/ses...A3773731FBAD13

Most rah-rah 3D and HFR (not only for 3D) advocate at NAB, Jon Landau…http://link.brightcove.com/services/...=2282434481001

He also believes that TV sports will eventually evolve to 60p exhibition in the home.

The only thing Jon really revealed about Avatar II and III is that they are working on underwater performance capture, i.e. actually underwater rather than underwater computer simulation. He wouldn’t answer the question…”Can the Na’vi breath underwater?”

If smartphones eventually become 5-6 inches a general rule we may only be left with smartphones as a means to watch movies. Laptops and desktops are also on the wayout if you believe the latest talk. This obsession with on the go viewing needs to stop. It is sacrificing too much for the sake of convenience. I don't want my home cinema destroyed by sad individuals with their nose stuck in a smartphone.
About that trend.

This from the NAB ‘Display Technologies of the Future’ …http://link.brightcove.com/services/...=2284647111001 < Peter also asked the audience (by raise of hands) “How many of you think 4K will be a fad?”

Interesting response.

I didn’t see LG there but that doesn’t mean that people weren’t talking about one of their recent accomplishments at the Georgia Dome, with approval, which many feel will be the primary 4K driver, i.e. sports…http://www.slashgear.com/lg-and-ncaa...time-08276913/

On the other hand, I didn’t see Aereo there either and people were certainly talking about them too (in an non-approving fashion), especially since they made a National News segment during NAB week…http://www.nbcnews.com/id/3032619/#51485531

I am pretty sure downloading will be the way to go, either by disc or Internet, more than likely consumers will have to ingest the info.

I would trade a physical disc for a digital code if they offered a small movie book like they with some blu ray release movies. That would be pretty cool as collecting would still be interesting.

Something early adopters of 4K may want to keep in mind is that the FMP-X1 device, affectionately referred to as the “puck box” by some consumers (and possibly the ‘AT mine’… http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-tank_mine by some RED folks behind closed doors, given the price differential between their REDRAY player and the FMP-X1 and how it will blow up RED’s plans to become the dominant consumer 4K movie distribution device)…anyway, the FMP-X1 will only work with Sony 4K tvs….not other brands.

So, depending upon one’s 4K TV purchasing plans, some folks might want to alternatively consider the PS4 to use as their 4K movie distribution platform device.

So, everyone that upgrades to a 4K display this year will be limited to 24/30 Hz? Did they mention anything about the new HDMI 2.0 standard? Seems strange that the new models would be obsolete in less than a year by hardware standards.

Nope. Nobody was talking about it...and yes, HDMI 1.4 has a limit at 30p for 4K.
